FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
World History Coming Alive -
New Exhibition to Open at the Okanagan Heritage Museum
Kelowna (March 22, 2011) - The Kelowna Museums Society, in partnership with Historica-Dominion Institute (The Memory Project: Stories of the Second World War), is pleased to announce the opening Okanagan Heritage Museum's newest exhibition, The Memory Project: Art and Stories of the Second World War. Opening April 9th, 2011, this exhibition shares the remarkable stories of the Okanagan Valley's Second World War veterans, inspired by the hands of young emerging artists.
"The Memory Project documents the experiences of Canadians who served to safeguard our freedom, and we are proud to have a collection of more than 100 stories from the Okanagan region," said Project Manager, Jenna Misener. "These stories have inspired young artists who will have the opportunity to exhibit their work in one of British Columbia's preeminent heritage collections."
"The Kelowna Museums look forward to exhibiting local artists' interpretations of these important and touching oral histories from our Second World War veterans," said Kelowna Museums' Associate Director of Exhibitions & Public Programming, Patti Kilback. "This is a wonderful opportunity to learn history through a contemporary media form and celebrate these memories and stories."
The artwork created for this project is a result of a national call to artists to create original, unreleased artwork based on the touching memories from our veterans. 10 winners have been selected for a special inclusion in the Okanagan Heritage Museum's exhibition.
These stories are documented in Canada's largest archive of Second World War oral history, through The Memory Project. It provides every living Second World War veteran with the opportunity to preserve their memories through recorded interviews and digitized memorabilia. Their stories are available in both official languages at www.thememoryproject.com<http://www.thememoryproject.com/kelowna>.
