Royal BC Museum provides more access for people with disabilities

Victoria BC - A vertical platform lift unveiled on the third floor of the exhibits building at the Royal BC Museum now provides easy access to the mezzanine level of the First Peoples Gallery.

Access to this level has been a challenge for some of the museum’s visitors ever since the gallery opened. All visitors will now be able to peer into the Pit House diorama, hear the stories of the masks, experience First Peoples lifestyles from around British Columbia and view the totem gallery from a higher vantage point.

“This is one of many access upgrades we’ve made over the years to meet the needs of our visitors, including people with disabilities, with mobility challenges, and with children in strollers” says Royal BC Museum CEO Pauline Rafferty. “It’s part of our ongoing commitment to enable visitors to enjoy all the museum has to offer.”

A recent and extensive electrical upgrade, which was funded by the Federal and Provincial governments, allowed for the additional power draw required to operate this type of lift.

One of the museum’s long-time volunteers, Margaret Shortliffe, was the first to ride the new elevator and said “It’s wonderful that this part of the gallery can now be reached by everyone.”
