Delta Museum & Archives Society presents -

The Plight of the Honey Bee!

Delta, BC - There have been alarming declines in the honey bee population in
different parts of the world. Many wild pollinators have also been suffering
the same fate. While researchers are trying to determine the causes of these
declines, the answer remains elusive. The Delta Museum and Archives Society
will introduce Paul Van Westendorp, BC's Provincial Apiculturist, to provide
some insight into the "Plight of the Honey Bee" at a special presentation to
be held at the Museum's Annex, 4918 Delta Street, Delta, on Thursday, May
19, 2011 from 7:30 to 8:30pm. Cost is $5.00 per person; pre-registration is
advised as seating is limited.

Paul Van Westendorp will highlight the critical role insect pollinators play
in our local environment, the dependency of modern agriculture on the
abundance of insect pollinators, and the possible causes and solutions to
stop pollinator declines. A solution must be found as the burgeoning world
population is more dependent than ever on bees to pollinate the numerous
food crops.

The evening will also provide an opportunity to visit the Delta Museum's
feature exhibit titled "Life of a Delta Bee", open for a special viewing on
Thursday, May 19 from 6:30 to 7:30pm at 4858 Delta Street. Join Beatrice the
Honeybee (her friends call her Bea) as she walks you through life as a bee
in Delta and introduces you to herself, family, friends, enemies and her
work around the community.  Explore the stories of past beekeepers in Delta;
the roles of beekeeping and apiaries in agriculture, and of pollination and
honey production. And you can find local Delta honey on sale in the Museum's
gift shop! (Please note, the Exhibit viewing is an optional addition, not a
component of the evening's presentation program.)

Join us in learning the importance of bees and other pollinators as they
enhance our daily lives pollinating our gardens and food crops, producing
honey, and providing insight to scientific research.
