At the Canmore Museum & Geoscience Centre we use our giftshop POS to record
visits. We sell the tickets there, and so it's easy to get a count of paying
customers over any specified time period. The fun happens when we need to
record non-paying visitors. We have a number of inventory items with no
price attached ("service items" they're called) with simple codes: GV for
gift shop visit, MV for member visit, CA for child admission (free), AF, CF,
SF and STF for adult, child, senior and student family members (one family
admission can consist of several of each of those types of visitor). We ring
each of them through as though they were items we were selling, but there's
no charge and we don't print a receipt. The stats seem to come out nicely.
We use the POS to record donations and memberships too.

Subject: [BCMA] gathering statistics
Does anyone know of or use statistical software to help guide decision
making? At the moment we use a cumbersome spreadsheet to analyse our visitor
numbers and other information, but it would be useful to be able to organize
data to make easier comparisons. Does anyone know of software specifically
designed for museums for this purpose or has anyone adapted software for use
in a museum?
Thanks for your help.
