The Quesnel and District Museum and Archives is offering free admission
to celebrate International Museums Day.

May 18th is the last day to view the photo exhibit Upstairs at Wah Lee's
Portraits from the C.S. Wing Studio, before it is packed to travel to
Touchestones Nelson Museum of Art and History and subsequently Esplanade
Arts and Heritage Center, Medicine Hat. ( If anyone is interested in
information about booking this traveling exhibit please contact the
ehunter at quesnel.ca.)

While the C.S. Wing exhibit is traveling, the Quesnel Museum will expand
the selection of photographs by C.D. Hoy which are on display. Both
photographers were active in Quesnel in the first three decades of the
twentieth century and documented the cultural diversity of the
community. The photographs of C.D. Hoy are exhibited in collaboration
with Barkerville Historic Town.

The Museum is pleased to announce that we have just launched our
redesigned web site. It provides more information about our exhibits
and archival collections and access to a sampling of our photographic
collections. It continues to provide access to the digitized Cariboo -
Observer newspaper. The site current contains the years 1908 - 1990.
We are grateful to the Integris Credit Union who have just approved a
grant to assist with the continuation of this digitization project.

Our web address remains the same: www.quesnelmuseum.ca
<http://www.quesnelmuseum.ca/> .

On a less happy note we have spent the day organizing an "emergency"
oral history recording. Joe Allen (age 94) was evacuated from his home,
which was swept away by the Cottonwood River on Monday. The Museum was
contacted by the office of MLA Bob Simpson to see if we could quickly
arrange to interview Mr. Allen, who had resided in the home for 46
years. This is an effort to preserve the wealth of knowledge held by
Mr. Allen and to provide a much needed distraction for him. Mr. Allen
understandably has been shaken by the loss of his home. The Friends of
the Quesnel Museum have been gathering oral histories from local
residents for thepast 5 years. The proposed interview is scheduled for
tomorrow afternoon.

A day in the life of a community museum!
