FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Cold Recall - Reflections of a Polar Explorer:
Exhibition Seminar - Else Berit Eikeland, Norwegian Ambassador to
Canada: The Norwegian northern strategy
MAY 24, 2011
VANCOUVER, B.C. - Else Berit Eikeland, Norwegian Ambassador to Canada
will present the Norwegian High North strategy with a focus on the close
relations between Canada and Norway, and the history we share in the
Arctic at the Vancouver Maritime Museum on Saturday May 28, 2011 at 2:00
pm to 3:30 pm in the TK Gallery. The seminar is free: admission charges
only apply if you wish to visit other parts of the Museum.
The high north is Norway’s number one foreign policy priority. The
overall aim is to enhance knowledge in and about the north, increase the
Norwegian activity and presence in the area and lay the foundations for
sustainable economic and social development in the years to come. Norway
aims to take a leading role in activities that set the parameters for
value creation and life in the north – ranging from business, research
and culture to engagement in the international arena and regional and
global diplomacy. Knowledge is at the core of Norway’s High North
strategy. We need knowledge about nature, the environment, resources,
new and existing economic activities, geopolitics – knowledge that can
provide a basis for new industries and increase value creation in
existing industries. With knowledge, we can meet the challenges and
opportunities in the High North.
This is the final in a 4-seminar series co-presented by the Royal
Norwegian Embassy in Ottawa and the Vancouver Maritime Museum in support
of the Roald Amundsen exhibit: Cold Recall - Reflections of a Polar
Explorer. The exhibit, developed by the Fram Museum in Norway, runs
until September 16, 2011. Previous series speakers included: Morten
Høglund, Chair of the Standing Committee of Parliamentarians of the
Arctic Region discussing Common Challenges in the North; Capt. Russell
D. Roberts with a presentation about sailing the Northwest Passage in a
sailboat; and Doreen Larsen Riedel speaking about her father, Henry
Larsen of the RCMP and captain of the St. Roch, and the influence on him
of Roald Amundsen.
