The Tree: From the Sublime to the Social
Organized and circulated by the Vancouver Art Gallery, this exhibition considers the tree as a subject in art from the late nineteenth century to the present. The Tree reveals a variety of different aesthetics and culture perspectives of some of British Columbia's most important visual artists, from Emily Carr's well-known interpretations of the West Coast forests, Gordon Smith's abstracts of the natural world, Rodney Graham's photographs of up-side down trees, Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun's politically charged art works which explore environmental devastation to Ian Wallace's photographs of mass protests against clear-cut logging of old growth forests. The diverse representations of the tree in this exhibition demonstrate its enduring power as a symbol, as well as our complex and changing relationship with our natural environment.

Fraser Valley 2011 Biennale
The Fraser Valley 2011 Biennale, presented in collaboration with the Abbotsford, Langley, Maple Ridge and Mission Arts Councils, is a series of juried exhibitions celebrating regional visual art. The Reach exhibition features 26 artists with works ranging from sculpture, painting, and photography to installation and video art. Participating artists include: Aaron Moran, Chris Woods, Dan Lefebvre, Darrel Spenst, David Evans, David Sands, Desneige Meyer, Doris Hutton Auxier, Holly McKeen, Jae Nam, Jo Priestley, Jo-Ann Sheen, Jonathan Sutton, Kate Bradford, Krista Bailie, Krista Kilvert, Paula Funk, Randall Steeves, Rosa Quintana Lillo, Sharon W Huget, Silviu Bejan, Susan Gorris, Sylvie Roussel-Janssens, Tara-Lynn Kozma-Perrin, Tom Konyves and Wallace Koopmans.

Field 103W by Janet Bright
The paintings in this exhibit were created based on the self-defined theory of 'Memo Realism', a theory which acknowledges the importance of memory, recognition, connection and reflection in the creation of art intended to elicit emotion, reaction and a sense of satisfaction for an artist and inevitably the viewer of art. Bright's paintings rendered in this style acknowledge and express the imprecision, fuzziness and these gaps of memory through the use of paint drippings, scrapings and intentional un-detailed brushwork. It is engaging then, for the viewer of these paintings, to fill in the blanks expressed by these mechanisms, with their own thoughts, their own experiences, their own understanding.

Our Communities Our Stories: You Look Marvelous!
More than simply articles of clothing, our favourites carry memories and stories that imbue them with importance, tangible links to wonderful moments in our past. You Look Marvelous! reaches into the permanent collection closet for garments with stories to tell - and look good doing it!

The exhibitions open Thursday, June 16 with a reception, including wine and hors d'oeuvres, from 7 to 9pm, with opening remarks at 7:30pm. On Saturday, June 18, the Reach hosts the Biennale Arts & Cultural Fair from 1-5pm in the Abbotsford Civic Plaza adjacent to The Reach.
