Why Museums Matter, Especially in the 21st Century
A Lecture on the Role of Museums in Today's Society
Saturday November 19th is the public opening of our newest exhibit Aliens Among US, which is a travelling exhibit from Victoria's Royal BC Museum.
To co-inside with the opening of this exhibit, Tim Willis, Director of Exhibits and Visitor Experience at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, will be giving a lecture on Why Museums Matter, Especially in the 21st Century, at the Okanagan Heritage Museum. This lecture will focus on museums from around the world and what they are doing to make a difference within the museum community.
A dynamic and engaging speaker, Tim Willis has an extensive background in the heritage sector. He attended the University of Wales in Cardiff and graduated with degrees in Environmental Design and Architecture. After moving to Canada, Tim worked in private practice with commissions to plan several of Alberta's heritage interpretive centers including Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. In the late 1980s, he joined the Royal Alberta Museum as Head of Exhibitions and Marketing.
Under Tim's leadership, the Royal Alberta Museum developed one of the most active exhibition programs in Canada. Over 3 million visitors attended blockbuster feature exhibitions on compelling stories from across the world - from dinosaurs, whales and bugs to Genghis Khan, Jesus Christ, the Dalai Lama and The Beatles.
Join us in what is sure to be a fun, fascinating discussion on museums and the important role they play now and in the future.
