Join East End-based house history researcher and blogger, heritage advocate and history walk guide James Johnstone for a tour of Vancouver’s East End. James will use excerpts from the recently reprinted collection of 50 oral histories of East End pioneers, Opening Doors by Daphne Marlatt and Carole Itter. This much loved groundbreaking East End history, originally published in 1979, was

reprinted in 2011 by Harbour Publishing thanks to a Vancouver 125 Grant.

As you tour the streets and alleys of old Strathcona, you will not only see some fascinating old houses and buildings but will meet scores of truly amazing characters from Strathcona’s past through their stories preserved in this book.
