Job Posting: Education Programmer (Permanent, Part-time)
Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia
The Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia (JMABC), as governed
by the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia, is the preeminent
and authoritative body for the collection and sharing of community
memory of Jewish life in British Columbia.
Since 1970, the Society's work has included operating the Jewish Museum
& Archives of British Columbia, publishing a regular journal, The
Scribe, authoring several books, recording oral histories of community
members throughout the province, and preserving and making accessible
the important photographs and records of the Jewish community through
traveling exhibits and educational programs.
The following position is as a vital member of a professional staff team
that supports the JMABC's on-going operations as a dynamic cultural
heritage organization.
The Education Programmer provides administrative, educational, and
training work for the Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia's
educational programs, special events, and exhibitions projects. The
Education Programmer exercises considerable independent action,
judgment, and initiative, in accordance with established policies and
procedures. The Education Programmer oversees staff and volunteers and
reports to the Board of Directors, departmental and ad-hoc committees
throughout the year.
REPONSIBILITIES:
* Researches, develops, coordinates, implements, and conducts
educational outreach programs and in-classroom programs that increase
understanding and enjoyment of the Jewish history and culture of British
Columbia for school groups (public and private schools, Jewish day and
supplementary schools), other groups, and the general public.
* Establishes public program and event priorities and objectives
and develops and coordinates programs and events in keeping with the
mandate of the JMABC.
* Prepares budgets, oversees approved budgets, prepares grant
applications, and oversees grant projects relating to exhibitions and
educational programming.
* Prepares and maintains records, reports, and correspondence
dealing with educational programming, special events, and volunteers.
* Researches and writes educational programs, training materials,
teaching aids, and teachers' materials for traveling exhibits and online
content.
* Engages experts for lectures, Philosophers' Cafes, and
workshops throughout the year.
* Works with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit, interview,
screen (including criminal record checks, when necessary), schedule, and
train and evaluate volunteers for the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC.
* Manages all marketing and communications on behalf of the JMABC
including media releases, promotional materials, advertisements,
e-newsletters, membership newsletters the JMABC website (
www.jewishmuseum.ca) and social media sites.
* Establishes and maintains communication with other staff,
community groups, educational institutions, teachers, other museums, and
other contacts in both the Jewish and general communities regarding
school programs, public programs, special events, and volunteers.
* Acquires, identifies, catalogues, and maintains a collection of
artifacts, audiovisual materials, and props used in educational programs
and traveling exhibitions.
* Develops and maintains a research and reading library for
training purposes.
* Represents the Jewish Museum and Archives of BC at conferences
or meetings dealing with educational programming and/or museum
programming.
* Leads Historic Walking Tours for groups throughout the year.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* A demonstrated interest in working in a heritage institution
shown through previous volunteer or paid work experiences and/or an
academic background in a related field such as history, anthropology,
museum studies, education, or Jewish studies. Master's degree
preferred.
* Working knowledge of Judaism and the history of the Jews of BC.
* Knowledge of contemporary educational objectives and curricula.
* Knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures used in
developing, coordinating, and implementing educational and training
programs.
* Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with other staff, volunteers, and the general public.
* Demonstrated ability to research, develop, coordinate, promote,
and evaluate school programs, special events, and volunteer training
programs, under general supervision.
* Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
for use in creating exhibit and promotional material.
* Working knowledge of website maintenance and HTML code.
* Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, supervise, motivate, and
evaluate volunteers.
* Working knowledge of museum curatorial methods and practices.
* Demonstrated ability to prepare budget estimates, oversee an
approved budget, and prepare and maintain work records, correspondence,
and related materials.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English in
oral and written form.
* Demonstrated ability to manage numerous projects at one time and
to meet deadlines.
HOURS OF WORK: Part-time, 25 hours per week, occasional evenings and
Sundays to perhaps evolve into full-time.
