DATE: October 20 ‐December 1, 2011
OPENING RECEPTION: October 20, 6pm to 8pm
Hide, verb, to keep out of sight; conceal.
Hide, noun, skin of an animal
Both of these definitions apply to the upcoming exhibition of the work of Andrea Russell. The opening reception is on Thursday, October 20, with a ritual fire dance, beginning at 7pm behind the Crafthouse Gallery, and followed by a reception in the Gallery, at 1386 Cartwright Street, Granville Island Curator Rosalind Aylmer
HIDE, the exhibit, is comprised of elegant and unique masks made from leather. The exhibition explores the concept of the choices we make in concealing or revealing aspects of our persona through the masks we wear in our daily lives. We present ourselves through masks that we hide behind, both literally and figuratively. Our masks may represent aspects of our personalities we wish to emphasize; they may be used to
hide our thoughts and feelings. Wearing a mask we can be someone else; we can take on attributes that exist only in our dreams; we can be freed from the constraints of self-knowledge. Masks have been used throughout history, and in cultures around the world, to communicate with gods and spirits, to represent certain powers, for storytelling, and for ceremonies where the mask becomes the reality. Russell uses the mask in the context of “hide”, to explore the hidden psyche; what we choose to reveal and what we choose to conceal. The titles of her pieces are telling: Open Book, Can’t Get Out, Running Ragged. These are aspects of the Self that we may hide from others or perhaps even from ourselves. Each mask may represent an identity we aspire to, a journey of the imagination that allows us a freedom from the façade we normally present to those around us.
Join us, to begin your own journey of exploration with Russell’s fascinating approach to masks, beautifully crafted of leather with found objects, felting, leaves, fabric and other materials.
