Laurel Packinghouse Restoration Project Wins Award
At its 2011 conference held at the Shadbolt Centre in Burnaby, the BC Heritage Society honoured heritage projects from across the province through its prestigious Annual Awards Ceremony. Among the recipients in 2011 was the recent restoration project undertaken on Kelowna's first designated heritage building, the Laurel Packinghouse.
BC Heritage Society Executive Director, Rick Goodacre, presented an Award of Honour to project team representatives: Randy Cleveland (City of Kelowna, Manager of Infrastructure Planning), Jim Meiklejohn (Architect), Gord Sandrin (Sawchuk Developments Ltd.) and Wayne Wilson (Executive Director, Kelowna Museums Society). "Restoration of this rare example of British Columbia's industrial heritage is certainly important locally." Goodacre pointed out. "More than that, however, it is part of the deep industrial history of our entire resource-rich province and the Laurel Packinghouse Restoration Project was clearly worthy of recognition."
Funding for the facility's $2.5 million structural upgrade was provided by the City of Kelowna ($1.4 million) with additional funds received through the Department of Canadian Heritage ($1.1 million). For its part, the Kelowna Museums Society's fundraising efforts raised more than $100,000 toward the reinstallation of exhibits in the building's BC Orchard Industry Museum and the BC Wine Museum and VQA Wine Shop.
"Heritage assets are an important part of every strong community", noted Cleveland. "Maintaining the Laurel Packinghouse as one of the Cultural District's iconic and cornerstone buildings demonstrates something of the maturity of our community," he added.
The Laurel Packinghouse Heritage Restoration Project was in good company at the 2011 Awards ceremony with other honours going to the Museum of Anthropology (Vancouver), the Cordova Street Stables (Vancouver), and The Bastion in Nanaimo. In all, the BC Heritage Society presented twelve awards at its 2011 event.
