THE BURNABY ART GALLERY LAUNCHES ITS ANNUAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR ARTISTS SERIES
BURNABY, BC - This Fall, The Burnaby Art Gallery in partnership with CARFAC BC launches its annual Professional Development for Artists series with a seminar led by acclaimed Canadian artist Brendan Fernandes on Thursday September 15th from 6-8pm. Entitled International Residences and Resources, Fernandes will share his experiences of participating in international artist residencies, biennials, and exhibitions throughout Asia, Europe, and the US, offering advice and guidance in developing international opportunities as a Canadian artist.
Born in Kenya of Indian heritage, Brendan Fernandes immigrated to Canada in 1989. He completed the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art (2007) and earned his MFA (2005) from The University of Western Ontario and his BFA (2002) from York University in Canada. He has exhibited internationally and nationally including exhibitions at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Art and Design New York, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, The Art Gallery of Hamilton, The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Andy Warhol Museum, The Art Gallery of York University, The Third Guangzhou Triennial and the Western New York Biennial through The Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Fernandes has participated in numerous residency programs including The Canada Council for the Arts International Residency in Trinidad and Tobago (2006), The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Work Space (2008) and Swing Space (2009) programs, Emerge 10 at Aljira: A Center for Contemporary Art, Newark, NJ (2008), the AIM Program at the Bronx Museum (2009), The New Work Residency at Harvestwork, NY (2009), the Gyeonggi Creation Center Residency at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Korea (2009) and ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany. He held the position of Artist in Residence at The School of Visual Arts, NY, in the graduate program for computer arts (2008). He is the recipient of a New Commissions Project through Art in General, NY (2010) and was the Ontario representative for the 2010 Sobey Art Award. In 2012 he will be featured in "Oh Canada" the largest survey of contemporary Canadian art ever produced outside Canada at the MASS MoCa. Fernandes is based between Toronto and New York.
Entering its second year, the Burnaby Art Gallery and CARFAC BC are excited to present another year of the Professional Development for Artists series. Geared towards practicing artists at any level in their career the series offers seminars and workshops to further their professional abilities and offer tools that will allow artists to thrive within the local community and beyond. DIY Project Building: Local Funding Resources
Art Historian, Educator, and Arts Administrator Carol-Ann Ryan will offer insight and resources for funding within the Lower Mainland and British Columbia. Ryan, who over this past summer launched a public art bike tour through local funding, will share her experience and expertise in finding funds to launch a creative endeavor.

Grant Writing
This full day workshop will offer insight into grant writing for artists led by Allison Collins an independent curator, writer, and arts administrator in Vancouver. Her professional experience includes four years at the City of Ottawa in the Arts Funding Unit, where she worked in an administrative capacity as a Coordinator of funding programs and awards projects. With Collins' expertise, participants will be offered resources and techniques for writing artist grants in Canada. Each participant will be asked to bring in proposals for projects and will be taken through the steps of developing that proposal to fit within a grant format through group and individual writing exercises. A lunch will be provided.

Marketing and Social Media for Artists
Looking to make a good first impression online? Led by Rebecca Coleman a freelance theatre publicist for over 10 years, this workshop offers resources and skills in self-promotion and marketing through a fun, hands-on exploration of social media tools. Coleman was an early adopter of social media (she began blogging and joined Facebook in 2007, and Twitter in 2008), she has become increasingly interested in using it as a marketing tool, and writes about the subject frequently on her blog, The Art of the Business. She has written an e-book called The Guide to The Guide to Getting Started With Social Media for Artists and Arts Organizations, which helps newbies create a marketing plan using social networking as a tool. Whether selling work, approaching galleries, or increasing an audience, this workshop helps artists develop a strategic approach to marketing. Instructor: Rebecca Coleman
