Next at MOA Fall 2011

The sun may still be shining, but we’ve got an amazing series of exhibits, programs, and special events to entice you inside MOA this fall. From our new welcome plaza being given a Musqueam name on September 18; to the opening of two new exhibits, A Green Dress: Objects, Memory, and the Museum on September 27 and ひろしま hiroshima by Ishiuchi Miyako on October 13; to an exciting range of programming both at MOA and at other venues in Vancouver, we welcome you and your friends and family to visit us early and often. Remember: MOA members and UBC staff, students, and faculty ALWAYS enjoy free admission. Below are exhibits and selected programs scheduled for Sept/Oct. For the complete list, please see www.moa.ubc.ca/events<http://www.moa.ubc.ca/events>.
SPECIAL EVENT
Musqueam Celebration at MOA
Sunday, September 18, 2011 (2:00-4:00 pm)
In recognition of the longstanding relationship between the Musqueam First Nation and the Museum of Anthropology, please join us on September 18 to celebrate MOA’s welcome plaza being given a Musqueam name. We will also be commemorating the installation of two Musqueam artworks, Salish Footprint by Susan Point and Transformation by Joe Becker. Come for an afternoon of music, performance, hands-on activities, artist demonstrations, film screenings, and a taste of salmon and bannock. Everyone welcome.
EXHIBITION OPENINGS
A Green Dress: Objects, Memory, and the Museum
September 27, 2011-February 12, 2012, The O’Brian Gallery, MOA
In this exhibit, created to complement ひろしま hiroshima by Ishiuchi Miyako (opening on October 13; see below), visitors will experience selected objects and media from MOA’s worldwide collection. Some are ancient, some are new. Some are inscribed with their histories, while others are uprooted - their origins, makers, and journeys erased or forgotten. Some, like the green dress of the title, speak to memories and relationships not contained by the Museum but still part of living communities.
ひろしま hiroshima by Ishiuchi Miyako
October 14, 2011-February 12, 2012, The Audain Gallery, MOA. Opening reception: Thursday, October 13, 2011, 7:00 pm (everyone welcome)
This powerful exhibition features 48 large- and small-scale photographs by Ishiuchi Miyako of clothing and personal items belonging to victims of the 1945 atomic bomb at Hiroshima. A catalogue featuring images from the exhibit and essays in English and Japanese accompanies the exhibition, and a monograph edited by MOA curator Karen Duffek, featuring Ishiuchi Miyako in conversation with Professor John O’Brian, Acting Head, UBC Art History, Visual Art & Theory Department, will also be available. ひろしま hiroshima is sponsored in part by Shiseido and the Japan Foundation. Media sponsor The Georgia Straight.
Note: Our summer exhibitions 'Inuit Prints: Japanese Inspiration' and 'Faces and Voices of the Inuit Art Market' are open to the public through Sunday, September 25, 2011.
