Instructor: Ruth Freeman

In this course, you will explore the role of exhibitions in the museum context and examine the key elements involved in planning relevant and meaningful exhibitions.

Your participation in this course will strengthen your ability to:
• Describe the evolving role of exhibitions in the museum context
• Understand an exhibition as a medium of communication
• Define the main issues and steps inherent in each exhibition planning stage
• Identify the expertise needed to plan an exhibition and the roles of key team members
• Consider the characteristics of visitors, their needs and learning styles
• Recognize the factors that produce a successful exhibition
• Gain some experience in planning an exhibition


Registration Deadline:  September 19, 2011 - late registrations accepted if space permits.
Fee:  CAD $681 (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options) including a CAD$75 materials fee and a CAD$100 tuition/registration deposit required with each registration form. The tuition balance of CAD$506 is due on or before the first day of the course. Please refer to our registration and withdrawal policies.
Facilitator
Ruth Freeman a Partner of Blue Sky Design, is an interpretive planner with more than twenty-five years of experience in the museum field. She was Coordinator of the Discovery Gallery, and then Chief Interpretive Planner at the Royal Ontario Museum during a period of major expansion of the galleries. In her recent work as a consultant, she has planned dozens of exhibitions for museums in Canada, the United States and Ireland. These projects, of varying scope and subject matter, include exhibition master plans, permanent galleries, travelling exhibitions, and informal learning experiences for museum visitors.
