(Museum Public Program Specialist)*
The City of Surrey's Parks, Recreation and Culture Department currently
has a part time Community Services Assistant 5 (Museum Public Program
Specialist) opportunity at the Surrey Museum. The Surrey Museum is a
24,000 sq. ft. facility with fantastic programming facilities, three
multi-purpose rooms and a 42-seat theatre. This position works in a
community development context to develop and present public programs,
courses, workshops and special events as a service and revenue source
for the Surrey Museum. The position reports to the Museum Manager.
In this role, typical duties include: Research, develop and implement a
variety of public courses, workshops and events to reflect changing and
permanent exhibits, seasonal opportunities and collections; coordinate
public presentations in the textile studio and planning and
implementation textile related programs; orient, train, schedule,
supervise and coach staff, volunteers and instructors; support facility
operations, opening, closing, security, safety, input CLASS data,
provide copy for Leisure Guide and promotions, monitor registrations;
handle and reconcile assigned petty cash, cash advances, expenditures
and revenues. The successful candidate will be familiar with principles
and practices of heritage interpretation, heritageprogram delivery and
community development methods; must be capable of planning and
implementing special events; demonstrated abilities to multi-task,
establish critical paths, track details, meet deadlines and achieve
other related duties.
Applicants must have completed Grade 12 supplemented by a degree/diploma
in a specialized discipline relevant to community museum public
programming from a recognized post secondary institution, plus 2 years
progressively responsible experience in this area of specialty,
including supervision, or an equivalent acceptable combination of
training and experience; effective written and oral communication
skills; experience working with volunteers and provision of supervision;
able to work in both indoor and outdoor situations; hold a valid BC
driver's license with a safe driving record and have a vehicle available
for work purposes. Strong proven organization abilities, friendly
welcoming personality and an energetic approach to program creation is
required. The position works Tuesdays to Saturdays, some evenings, 35
hours/week over a 50-week year. This position requires the completion
of a criminal records check.
