Wildlife, Dinosaurs and Royalty Headline Upcoming Royal BC Museum Exhibitions
Victoria, BC - The Royal BC Museum unveiled its upcoming 2011-2012 exhibition schedule today featuring an outstanding international line up aimed at nature lovers, budding paleontologists and devoted royal watchers.
Three major international touring exhibitions will be uncrated beginning Dec. 16 with the North American premiere of Wildlife Photographer of the Year from London’s Natural History Museum.
Two more shows will open back-to-back next summer - Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries opening in May 2012 for its only Canadian appearance, and Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration opening in June 2012 to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.
“After a successful run offering a behind the scenes glimpse of our own natural history collection, we are throwing open the doors for our visitors to experience new explorations and discoveries“ said Pauline Rafferty, CEO of the Royal BC Museum. “This year’s exhibitions herald from collections across the country, across the world and across time - there is something exciting for everyone.”
The Royal BC Museum’s upcoming exhibition season kicks off with Wildlife Photographer of the Year, running Dec. 16, 2011 to Apr. 9, 2012. Visitors will experience the wonders of nature through the lenses of prize-winning photographers from around the world. This visually striking exhibition showcases the best 108 photographs chosen from the more than 40,000 entries in the annual competition, organized by London’s Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine. There will also be a full slate of photography-themed events, activities and presentations during the exhibition’s run.
Dinosaurs return to the Royal BC Museum in May 2012 for a four-month summer visit. The exhibition is organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York and opens in Victoria following a wildly popular U.S. tour that also included stints at museums in Houston, San Francisco, Chicago, and Raleigh.
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is being marked in royal style in Canada’s most British city. Queen Elizabeth II by Cecil Beaton: A Diamond Jubilee Celebration arrives at the Royal BC Museum in June 2012 direct from London’s famed Victoria and Albert Museum. The exhibition features nearly 100 portraits by the celebrated royal photographer, designer and avid diarist Cecil Beaton (1904-1980). The exhibition depicts the Queen in her roles as young princess, monarch and mother, and will include a number of previously unpublished photographs, alongside extracts from Beaton’s personal diaries and letters. The exhibition runs until
Sept. 3, 2012.
“We look forward to working with our partners in the business, tourism and education sectors to bring these remarkable exhibitions to life for British Columbians and visitors,” said Rafferty.
Held-Over until Oct. 16
The Other Emily: Redefining Emily Carr is being held over until Oct. 16 due to popular demand. The exhibition includes Carr’s well-loved masterpieces, early sketches, photographs and journal entries as well as displays of period clothing, objects and artifacts. Eighteen contemporary paintings of Carr by artist Manon Elder are presented in counterpoint with the archival photographs that inspired them.
The Other Emily will then be re-configured for the June 2012 debut opening of the Royal BC Museum at Wing Sang, the museum’s new satellite location in Vancouver’s Chinatown.
Last Chance to Go Behind the Scenes
Visitors have until Oct. 10 to catch Royal BC Museum: Behind the Scenes and get an insider’s look at the museum’s 125‐year‐history of scientific research. Peer into the exciting world of the museum’s natural history curators.
