News Release
Mission Museum's Edwardian Garden
Mission, BC - If you haven't checked out the garden around the museum lately, you are in for a pleasant surprise! The weeds, grass, blackberries and unmentionables have been transformed into a tranquil garden with a brick lined meandering path. Amongst the new plants are two industrial sewing machines that had been hidden in the previous disarray of the museum grounds. But what makes the garden Edwardian? Edwardians craved a rural idyll to capture the romance of the countryside within the confines of the ever-expanding urban and suburban landscape. The color palette is green and white and the plantings feature small shrubs, perennials, ground covers and edible strawberries. It will provide enjoyment for all Mission residents and showcase one of our prominent historic buildings (built in 1907), which was constructed during the Edwardian era. The garden will also strengthen the Museum's role as an anchor for the downtown business area, which is currently undergoing revitalization.
This large project has been a joint venture between local Gorilla Gardener, Heidi Smith, the Mission District Historical Society, Peggy Jessome of Idea Garden Designs, gardening volunteers and the local community, including the Mission Community Foundation, all of which generously funded the garden with over $2500.00 in cash or 'in kind' donations. Everyone will be acknowledged in a 'recognition book,' which will be located inside the Museum. The official opening of the garden will be held Saturday, April 14th from 1:00-3:00. All are welcome to explore the garden and the museum!
If you are interested in this project and others, please visit the Mission District Historical Society's website at www.missiondhs.com<http://www.missiondhs.com> for more information.
