Top Ten Endangered Heritage Sites

Announcement - May 5th, 2012

Heritage Vancouver invites you to the announcement of its 2012 Top Ten Endangered Sites on Saturday May 5th at twelve noon in front of the Museum of Vancouver. Donald Luxton, President of Heritage Vancouver, will answer your questions and conduct interviews. We will have photos and position papers for the sites and you will have the opportunity to photograph two vintage buses.

Attend the Press Conference and be the first to find out what’s on Heritage Vancouver’s 2012 Top Ten Endangered List. This year’s number one site has never been on our Top Ten before. Come and discover what it is.

Heritage Vancouver launched its Top Ten Endangered Sites in 2001 and since then this important initiative has guided the work of Heritage Vancouver and been used by both staff and councillors at Vancouver City Hall. The purpose of the Top Ten is to draw attention to and create appreciation for Vancouver’s heritage buildings, special features, streetscapes and neighbourhoods that are under threat. In 2005, Heritage Vancouver received a City of Vancouver Heritage Award of Merit for its Top Endangered Sites and Bus Tour Program because of its effectiveness in raising awareness of heritage conservation issues citywide.

Here are just a few of the sites from previous Top Ten Lists that were under imminent threat of demolition and were subsequently restored: The Wing Sang Building at 51 East Pender; Firehall #15 at E 22nd and Nootka; the Evergreen Building at 1285 West Pender Street; the Domtar Salt Building at 85 West 1st Avenue near Manitoba; and the First Church of Christ, Scientist on Georgia. By far the biggest loss from previous years is the Pantages Theatre that was demolished in 2011.

After the Press Conference at 1 pm, two vintage buses will leave the museum on a tour of the sites and will return back to the museum at 5 pm. To purchase tickets for the tour www.heritagevancouver.org
