"Switching On:

Creating the Electrified Sub-Division

of British Columbia Railway"

by P.H. Bridge

Prince George, August 11, 2012 - The Central British Columbia Railway &
Forestry Museum is pleased to announce its first publication, "Switching On:
Creating the Electrified Sub-Division of British Columbia Railway" by BC
Rail engineer Peter Bridge. This book tells the untold story of rail line
electrification and the construction of the fleet of electric locomotives in
the 1980s which made BC a world leader in freight railway technology.

The 130 km long branch line to Tumbler Ridge was constructed by the British
Columbia Railway within the years 1981-84 in an isolated region of northeast
British Columbia to haul coal destined for Japanese steel-making.
Construction time was officially recorded as "995 days." Electrification of
the line was not seriously considered until 1982. It was then that an
extraordinary set of circumstances came together from local and foreign
origins, with the result that the electrification project could be planned
and completed within two years, a time frame which may never be bettered and
which makes the circumstances of its creation and construction of particular
interest.

The book includes eight pages of color photos and a technical appendix, and
is aimed at the general public as well as engineering students and anyone of
a technical frame of mind, particularly those who examine the last surviving
electric locomotive at the Railway and Forestry Museum in Prince George.

Taken as a whole, the booklet records an extraordinary feat of co-operative
effort and its contribution to railway development. It also provides
pointers for anyone starting to promote or design new heavy haul railway
electrification. Collectors of railroad memorabilia will glean some new
facts and photos.

So far the museum has sold over 50 copies to individuals and groups from as
far away as the United Kingdom.

"Switching On: Creating the Electrified Sub-Division of British Columbia
Railway" is priced at 19.99 and is available through the Railway & Forestry
Museum, the Exploration Place, the West Coast Railway Heritage Park and
Books & Company.
