Heritage Vancouver invites you to spend a morning touring the historic fishing village of Steveston with historical interpreter Christina Froschauer. The Coast Salish people say there were so many fish they could cross the Fraser River on the backs of salmon. It is from the culling of this once abundant natural resource that an important industry and a multicultural community blossomed over a century ago.
You will explore how canning became a swiftly growing industry on the West Coast of British Columbia, drawing in workers from Vancouver neighbourhoods and fishing cultures from around the world. Along the way you will visit significant buildings such as the Steveston Museum and find out about legacy buildings that have been lost such as Hong Wo’s general store.
Christina will share unique stories about the town’s resident dog, the history of Steveston’s criminals, and other fascinating tidbits that give the town its special character. The tour will conclude with a discussion about today’s Steveston and the surviving fishing industry, which is no longer on the backs of salmon.
After a lunch at Pajo’s Fish and Chips, you are invited to explore the Gulf of Georgia Cannery where you will discover how salmon and herring were processed as well as the day-to-day love and hardships experienced by the cannery workers. A special group rate of $6.55 per person will apply. Tours run every hour on the hour until 5:00pm.
