Heritage Vancouver and St. Paul’s Hospital invite you to an evening of
conversation about “St Paul’s Hospital – Seismic Upgrade.” In June of this
year, the BC Government committed to the redevelopment of St Paul’s
Hospital in its current location. This means St. Paul's will see significant
expansion and renovation over the coming years. The hospital is on Heritage
Vancouver’s Top Ten Endangered Sites for 2012. Hopefully the recent funding
news will turn St. Paul’s into one of our “Heritage Success Stories.”

One of the many challenges of redeveloping the hospital while maintaining
operations will be the seismic upgrade of the existing structures. Bonnie
Maples of Providence Health Care will provide a brief overview of the
redevelopment context and John Sherstobitoff of Ausenco Sandwell, will
outline the structural engineering options being considered.

For the historic Burrard buildings a “conventional” solution of concrete shear
walls will be assessed against an “innovative” base isolation option. For the
Providence buildings “internal” and “external” upgrade options which may
incorporate viscous dampers will be compared. Animations of building
performance, fundamentals of base isolation and dampening systems,
constructability of solutions, and examples of similar applications will be
presented.
