Goya: The Disasters of War and Los Caprichos
Organized by the National Gallery of Canada
Francisco Goya's remarkable series of prints, The Disasters of War, details the brutality and horror of the 19th century Peninsular War in Spain. His etchings are a combination of allegory, illustration, political commentary and vignette. One of the great masters of the nineteenth century, he combined brilliant techniques with social commentary that embodied the anti-war, humanitarian commentary of the time and reflect similar political and social issues that we face in contemporary society. This exhibition also includes a rare bound edition of Goya's satirical prints Los Caprichos. "We are very honoured to be bringing in this exhibition from the National Gallery of Canada and to have it generously sponsored by Polygon Homes Ltd.", says Suzanne Greening, Executive Director at The Reach.

In conjunction with the exhibition The Reach and the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) bring a peace symposium to Abbotsford that explores the nature of peace and the relationship between art and peace-making. Goya: Conversations on War and Peace will be held Saturday, February 4, 2012 beginning at noon with a guided tour of Goya: The Disasters of War and Los Caprichos followed by the symposium at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford. The keynote address by Ernie Regher will focus on the Nature of War Today. The address will be followed by a panel discussion on the Nature of Peace Today. Regehr will be joined by Dr. Victoria Marie, a teacher, researcher and activist based in Vancouver and Dr. Saul Arbess, a cultural anthropologist and National Co-chair of the Canadian Department of Peace Initiative. The symposium ends with a conversation between art historian and writer Dr. Dorothy Barenscott and artist/writer Dick Averns that asks the question - How do cultural practitioners explore the issues of war and conflict? The symposium is free and all are welcome. RSVP to Kat Wahamaa kwahamaa at thereach.ca<mailto:kwahamaa at thereach.ca> or call The Reach at 604-864-8087 x124.

Waterscapes: Reframed - Gu Xiong
Waterscapes: Reframed focuses on the Yangzi River in China and Fraser River in British Columbia. The two rivers are positioned as metaphors for hybrid identity and culture and are aligned with concepts of flux and transition as an effect of globalization. Waterscapes: Reframed addresses issues around hybrid culture and its relationship to place, migration, boundary and transformation in the 21st century and examines the role of the waterways - oceans, lakes and rivers - in shaping specific migration flows, including individual experiences of displacement, dispossession and adaptation. The exhibition consists of a thousand folded boats and plaster salmon hung from the ceiling that wind through the gallery space like the flow of a river making reference to the Fraser and Yangzi rivers. Visitors will have the chance to make their own paper boat to take away.

Our Communities Our Stories: Policing With Pride - Abbotsford & Matsqui Police History
The City of Abbotsford came into existence on January 1, 1995 and with it the Abbotsford Police Department. The Department's predecessor, the Matsqui Police Department, had been responsible for policing the District of Matsqui for exactly 40 years, from January 1, 1955. The new force would assume responsibility for the entire community, building on the history and experience of the MPD and seeking to grow and develop along with the newly formed City. The Our Communities Our Stories exhibition Policing With Pride looks at the fascinating history of policing in Abbotsford.

The Grotto and South Gallery
In The Grotto, Charles Chappell presents, Transformation, a series of furniture pieces that have been painted with reference to famous visual artists and designers. In the South Gallery, Robert Sheridan presents, A Century of Jazz, a series of paintings of musicians and vocalists from the beginnings of jazz in New Orleans in the early 1900s to the present.

The exhibitions open January 26 with a reception, including wine and hors d'oeuvres, 7 to 9 pm and opening remarks at 7:30pm. Michael Audain, Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Gallery of Canada and Neil Chrystal, President and CEO of Polygon Homes will be speaking. Admission to the opening reception and exhibitions is free and open to the public. The Reach is located at 32388 Veterans Way, Abbotsford.
