The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a temporary full-time (from approx. March 5, 2012 to approx. March 15, 2013) Arts & Heritage Curator to join our team of professionals in the Recreation Culture, and Parks Division, Recreation Facilities and Programs Department.
Reporting to the Cultural Services Manager you will be responsible in this unionized position for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the department's museum and exhibition programs and extension exhibition programs. You will access, catalogue, index and store the municipality's collections of artefacts, specimens, fine art and archival materials, including firearms as well as undertaking research into local history and prehistory; providing reference services to researchers and developing materials for publication and dissemination. You will also assist in the planning, development and implementation of arts and heritage programs at various sites and facilities in the municipality.
Your education will include a University graduation with a degree in history, geography, anthropology, fine arts, museology, arts administration, heritage resource management, Canadian studies, or a related discipline plus considerable related experience including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. You will have considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, philosophy and objectives of museums, art galleries, archives and heritage conservation as they relate to the work performed; as well as of the methods, practices and techniques used in the acquisition, identification, documentation, conservation, exhibition and interpretation of museum artefacts, specimens, art works and archival materials, and of the arts and heritage needs, interests and resources of the municipality; as well as trends, issues and practices in museums and galleries, in the arts and in heritage conservation at the regional, provincial and national levels. A valid BC Class 5 (full-privilege) driver's license, Firearms Possession/Acquisition License, and a Serving it Right Certificate is required.
This position is defined by the Township of Langley as positions of trust (Child Safety) and requires a criminal record check.
The CUPE rate of pay for this position is $29.31 - $34.53 per hour (2011 rates), plus 12% in lieu of benefits. The hours of work are non-standard hours and/or non-standard work weeks.
