David Alexander: The Shape of Place

New art book a first for Kelowna Art Gallery

January 17, 2012 - Kelowna, BC: For the first time ever, the Kelowna Art Gallery has partnered with a book publisher, in this case the prestigious McGill-Queen's University Press, for our newly released art book: David Alexander: The Shape of Place. The volume is a full-colour, full-length, multi-authored publication on Alexander's art that complements his solo exhibition of the same name, on at the gallery until March 25, 2012. Reproductions of many of the artist's major works, as well as small paintings and working drawings, are interpolated among texts by six authors that provide a range of insights into his work.

The six writers are critic Robert Enright, award-winning Canadian author Sharon Butala, Icelandic curator and museum director Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson, Canadian curator Ihor Holubizky, the late Edmonton art writer Gilbert Bouchard, as well as Kelowna Art Gallery Curator, Liz Wylie. Each of these writers provides a different point of view from which to engage with Alexander's practice.

David Alexander is a nationally known artist working to personally extend the depiction of landscape into the realm of contemporary art. Originally from BC, Alexander has travelled the world, experiencing and interpreting various remote locales as he has hiked and boated through them.

The solo exhibition of his work, David Alexander: The Shape of Place, is on view at the Kelowna Art Gallery through March 25, 2012, and is comprised of some sixty-five paintings, as well as sketchbooks from the last three decades of the artist's career. Depicted in the works are such varied locales as the Canadian Arctic, Iceland, Greenland, the prairies, and the Rocky Mountains.

The book David Alexander: The Shape of Place is now in wide distribution and available online from the Gallery's website or from bookstores across Canada. The book is also available for in-person purchase at the Kelowna Art Gallery, and retails for $29.95 plus tax for Gallery members, and $39.95 plus tax for non-members.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in downtown Kelowna. For more information about current exhibitions, public programming or special events, please visit the Kelowna Art Gallery online at www.kelownaartgallery.com <http://www.kelownaartgallery.com/> .
