I love photography and am now taking formal training at Langara in digital
photography, so I made a special point of going to see this *"Wildlife
Photographer of the Year" *exhibit in Victoria. This is its the only stop
in Canada.
This exhibit is absolutely incredible! It is a MUST SEE! The images are
very large back lit high gloss versions and they are breathtaking. Don't
forget to read the captions because they tell what equipment the
photographer used, their settings and what they did to capture the shot.
Some shots were made in 10 seconds where as others took days of waiting for
just the right moment. There are photos by teens and pre-teens and I felt
that their quality was as good as those by adults. When you read how the
photographer got the photos of the swimming polar bear and how the bear
touched his camera lens with its paw, or the shark photos, you will
probably think that some of these photographers are dedicated,
but suicidal! The winning photographers are from all over the World but
there is a local touch. One photo by a Canadian photographer shows on the
tracks in Burnaby a coyote (pronounced "kye-ote" to rhyme with "tote") not
the American "kye-o-tee" pronunciation as this animal is North of the 49th
Parallel ;-)
A lovely companion piece to the exhibit is a book with the photos in full
colour. The RBCM Gift Shop had sold out of it twice by the time I visited
and did not even have a sample copy left! I loved the exhibit so much that
I ordered a book -- sight unseen. It arrived today and I love it! The show
and book are inspirational.
The only problem is that this is an ANNUAL World competition and I easily
could fill a bookcase and empty my bank account by purchasing all of the
preceding and future annual books - assuming the unlikely scenario that
anyone would part with their copies.
