NANAIMO MUSEUM

Media Release: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Live video chat with Canadian Astronaut

One of Canada's newest astronauts will be making a virtual visit to
Nanaimo. The Nanaimo Museum is hosting Major Jeremy Hansen for a video
chat and presentation. The event takes place on Thursday, August 9 at
1pm as part of the schedule of space-themed activities taking place this
summer at the museum.

Major Hansen will talk about what led him to become an astronaut and his
recent participation in NASA's astronaut training program. His
presentation will be approximately 20 minutes long and geared towards
children and youth. A live video chat question and answer period with
Major Hansen will take place immediately following his presentation.
Admission to the presentation is included in the museum's entrance fee,
although donations are always gratefully accepted.

Major Hansen's joined the Canadian Space Agency in 2009 and graduated
from Astronaut Candidate training at NASA in 2011. He has been a member
of the Canadian Armed Forces for the last 18 years and holds a Master of
Science in Physics. Prior to joining the Canadian Space Program, Major
Hansen served as a CF-18 fighter pilot and his responsibilities included
ensuring the effectiveness of NORAD Air Defense Operations.

Major Hansen's virtual visit takes place during the Nanaimo Museum's
feature exhibit To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA. The children's
programming for the exhibit includes weekly Rocket Lab children's
drop-in programs on Thursdays from 1pm-3pm, until the end of August.
The activities are designed for children between the ages of 5-12 years
and include making straw rockets and participating in educational
activities related to gravity. Rocket Lab has been immensely popular
with families because of the hands-on activities and flexible drop-in
format. On August 9th, Rocket Lab will start after the live chat with
Major Hansen.

The Nanaimo Museum and historic Bastion are open 7 days per week from
May long weekend to Labour Day. See the museum's website at
www.nanaimomuseum.ca <http://www.nanaimomuseum.ca> for a complete
listing of summer activities. For more information about the museum's
summer programs and tours, contact Aimee Greenaway at the Nanaimo Museum
