*Barkerville to Host a Pie Eating Contest of Olympic Proportions*

*July 17, 2012 (Barkerville, BC)*-- The opening ceremonies of the 2012
Summer Olympic Games take place in London, England on July 27^th . But
if a trip to "Old London Towne" isn't in the cards for travellers to and
from British Columbia this year, then Barkerville Historic Town is ready
and willing to serve as the next best thing. This Saturday, July 21st,
Barkerville and the Goldfields Bakery play host to the 9th annual
Williams Creek Sports Day and Pie Eating Contest, a summertime tradition
that has local and regional visitors coming back to "the Creek" year
after year.
Classic gold rush era sporting events and games begin at 1:00 PM with
crowd favourites like the children's Broad Jump. The competition is all
in fun, of course, and includes a Ladies' Nail Driving competition for
adults, a popular children's Funny Face contest, and a Cracker
Eating/Whistle race. Later in the afternoon adult ladies (both costumed
and otherwise) can try their hands at a traditional Egg and Spoon race
on an 1870s obstacle course, followed by a Sack Race, Egg Toss, and
giant Tug o' War.
At the close of the games, Barkerville guests will be encouraged to
gather at the Goldfields Bakery, where banana cream pies await
participants in the bakery's annual pie-a-thon. With categories for
hungry children and determined adults, the pie-eating contest will
provide an amusing, if somewhat messy way to cap off the day... and
there will be prizes galore for the epicurean victors.
Fairlith Harvey, Barkerville's Special Events Coordinator, is confident
that visitors to the park on Sports Day won't be disappointed.
"Barkerville provides guests with a unique way to experience a by-gone
era, highlighting the fun and vivacity of a community that sprang up
under immense pressure and industrial hardship 150 years ago," Harvey
said. "People who come to Barkerville really connect with that, as
evidenced by our many guests from all over the world who attend Sports Day."
"This year won't be an exception," she added.
