Pioneer Celebration of the Century Marks Huble House Centennial

Prince George, BC - In 1912, Albert Huble had no idea that the house he was
building on the banks of the Fraser River would one day become a local
destination, a symbol of our region's pioneer history, and the jewel of the
Huble Homestead Historic Site. One hundred years later, this house is the
focus of the pioneer celebration of the century - Homestead Days at Huble
Homestead Historic Site on Sunday and Monday, August 5 & 6.

Albert Huble arrived in the Fort George area in the early 1900s and soon
struck up a business partnership with a fellow trapper named Edward Seebach.
Having established trap lines and a trading post at the southern end of the
Giscome Portage, the route most travelers took between waterways in the days
of river traffic, the two quickly expanded their business to include
freighting, guiding, surveying, and merchandising. Huble brought his wife,
Annie, and daughter Ada to live at the Portage in 1911, and soon, with a new
baby expected, the Huble family realized they needed a larger house. Huble
spent much of 1912 building this new home; at a time when most homes were
one-room cabins, this two story, squared log house in the midst of a
seemingly endless wilderness was remarkable, and now, a century later, it
remains unique as the oldest building in its original location in the
Regional District of Fraser Fort George.

Homestead Days on August 5 & 6 will be two days of old-fashioned fun
commemorating this milestone. A centennial ceremony, complete with cake,
will be held at 12:30 on Sunday. Each day guests can take a guided tour and
step back in time as the Huble house comes to life each hour, or take the
Restoration Tour at 1:00 to learn how volunteers restored the house. At
noon, visitors can bid on homemade lunches in the Boxed Lunch Social, and
music and demonstrations such as blacksmithing, wood lathe, and ice cream
making will happen throughout the day. Each afternoon features a full
schedule of races and contests for all ages, such as the 50 Yard Dash,
Wheelbarrow Race, Three Legged Race, and Men's and Ladies' Needle and Thread
Race; over $100 in prizes are up for grabs each day!

Homestead Days runs from 10:00 to 4:00 Sunday and Monday. Huble Homestead
Historic Site is located 40km north of Prince George, just off Highway 97 on
Mitchell Road, and admission is by donation. Visit hublehomestead.ca for the
full schedule of activities, and for information on other Huble house
centennial projects.
