[BCMA] Upcoming Courses in Heritage Resources Management at Athabasca University

Hello British Columbia Heritage Community!

Whether you're an aspiring, emerging, or established heritage professional, or a volunteer or amateur history enthusiast, there has never been a better time to consider taking a course from the Heritage Resources Management (HRM) program at Athabasca University.   We currently have 13 distance-based classes open for registration, ranging from the introductory undergraduate level up to advanced graduate studies, offered either in an undergraduate University Certificate in HRM or a graduate Post Baccalaureate Diploma in HRM.

Here are three great reasons to consider studying with us:

1. Athabasca University specializes in offering distance-based education, and we are very good at accommodating students with busy lives in diverse locations.  If you have a full-time career, or other personal or family responsibilities that keep you away from a conventional classroom, we can help you access top-quality museum and heritage studies training through our program.

2. The Heritage Resources Management courses offer the most current content and materials.  All courses are online, and offer a dynamic, web-based multimedia learning experience.  Classes are taught and tutored by top heritage practitioners from across the country. The program thus blends academic excellence with the most exciting elements of technology-driven learning while ensuring that students receive full support from qualified academic staff. Thus, instructors are able to get to know each program student well, and offer a personalized and supportive learning experience.

3. We have a course for just about everyone. As an open access university, our undergraduate courses are available to anyone 16 years of age and older.  We welcome students looking for just one class as well as those planning to complete one of our credentials, or ladder their studies to a full degree. All classes are rigorous, fully recognized university-level courses, and students can take one or just a few courses as professional development, or complete either our undergrad or grad credential or eventually even ladder those studies into a full BA or MA program.

Of the courses currently open for registration, two are offered in paced format in a conventional September-to-December semester. Both are graduate courses, which means that they are open to any student with an undergraduate degree in any subject or discipline.  The two paced courses are:

HERM 501: Issues in Heritage Resources Management
HERM 542: Issues in Planning Historic Places

As well, we offer the graduate courses HERM 512, (Advanced Methods in Heritage Research) and the final project practicum course, HERM 691, as individualized study courses on continuous offer.

Additionally, we have 9 undergrad courses, including ones on preventative conservation, collections, heritage policy, and interpretive programming, among others. These courses are offered continuously, with start dates on the first day of each month.  For more information on undergraduate courses, please go to:

The application deadline for the grad courses is one month prior to the start date.  Therefore, For HERM 501 and 542, THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS AUGUST 1 (but we may be able to accommodate late registrations as mailing time and space permits).
