Subject: [BCMA] Impact of partial changeover to LED lighting
FYI, a little over a month ago, we changed out about half of our mr-16 50w Halogen lights over to LED 10w, so far the results are encouraging. Over the previous 9 years our average daily consumption over the month of May was 205kwh, with the lowest being 148kwh, this current May we are down to a daily average of 88kwh.
Now since our main heat is via electrical heatpumps, weather conditions also have an impact, but the dramatic difference is encouraging.
Should the next month bring a similar reduction in energy use, we will look at replacing the rest of our mr16 in the gallery portion of the museum. We went with 3000k white lamps in our entrance, giftshop, office space. We would likely go with warmer 2700K in the gallery.
We like the fact that not only do the bulbs use less power, they should last many years and they are cool to the touch, so much easier to move around the track. The drawback is the upfront cost of around $35 a bulb, but we estimate a return of about 1.5 – 2 years. Because of the potential impact on our annual operating cost, our local Lion’s are considering financing some of the change over.
