New Royal BC Museum Bestseller Takes History to the Skies

VICTORIA, BC - In the new British Columbia bestseller, Furrows in the Sky: The Adventures of Gerry Andrews, published this month by the Royal BC Museum, historian Jay Sherwood chronicles the life of a man whose pioneering work in aerial photography left an indelible mark on the development of British Columbia.

Gerry Andrews’ airborne imagery dramatically changed forestry in BC in the late 1930s and assisted the Allies in the D-Day landings that helped end the Second World War in Europe.

>From humble beginnings as a rural BC school teacher, Andrews later reached many provincial milestones as a forester and a surveyor. As British Columbia’s longest-serving surveyor general from 1951 to 1968, he supervised the mapping of the province’s largest engineering projects, often using aerial photography. Andrews died in 2005 at the age of 102.

In Furrows in the Sky, Sherwood tells the story of this man’s extraordinary life, based on his personal correspondence, unpublished manuscripts and diaries, interviews with people who knew him, and articles written by and about him. The book includes an outstanding collection of photographs of remote parts of British Columbia taken by Andrews during his work.

Referring to his work as “ploughing photographic furrows up and down the sky,” Andrews travelled to every corner of BC and is regarded as a legend among surveyors. Well-liked by colleagues in the field, he was a genuine trailblazer who, according to Sherwood, always arrived with a kind word and a red flannel sock containing a bottle of hooch.

Sherwood will take this compelling biography across the province with an illustrated presentation about Gerry Andrews at the following dates and locations (check for times at each venue):
