MP Hiebert defends cuts to archive program
PeaceArchNews Share/Partager
The federal government is not responsible for the elimination of the National Archival Development
Program - a move critics say could lead to the collapse of Canada's archival system. That´s the message
from South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale MP Russ Hiebert, responding to an open letter to him from
White Rock Museum and Archives' Hugh Ellenwood, published in Tuesday's Peace Arch News. More/LIRE

Queen's jewel-studded 'Maple Leaf' dress takes spotlight at Museum of Civilization
Canada.com Share/Partager
With all of Britain immersed in a weekend of supreme pageantry celebrating the 60th anniversary of Queen
Elizabeth's reign, details about how Canada's main history museum will mark this year's Diamond Jubilee
have quietly emerged. More/LIRE PLUS
Now and then: Cowboy art through the years at the Glenbow Museum
Calgary Herald Share/Partager
The late Charlie Russell created the imagery and iconography that would form the foundation of our pop-
culture notions of the mythical Alberta cowboy, but contemporary artists have often sought to challenge and
deconstruct those notions. Two exhibitions on now at the Glenbow Museum give a back-to-back look at
each of those approaches. More/LIRE PLUS
Canada's cutting-edge meteorite research a victim of budget cuts
The Vancouver Sun Share/Partager
One of Claire Samson's favourite objects is a thumb-sized lump of (mostly) iron from a distant part of the
solar system, its surface pitted and scoured by its super-hot fall through Earth's atmosphere. Rocks do fall
from the sky, and Canada's meteorite experts have built themselves into a world power in the specialized
field of studying them. More/LIRE PLUS
Billion-year old meteorites, found in Canada, go on auction
Canada.com Share/Partager
A slice of one of Canada's most famous meteorites - a large chunk of which was traded by the Geological
Survey of Canada in 1997 to acquire a major U.S. collection of space rocks - is to be sold for up to $8,000
at a Bonhams auction in New York. More/LIRE PLUS
More/LIRE PLUS

With 128 buildings offering architecture, history and stories during Doors Open Ottawa, making a checklist
can be daunting. More/LIRE PLUS
Restoring vintage bicycle was quite a ride
Herald News Share/Partager
Darrell Thompson never worked on a bicycle until his boss at Highland Ford took on the restoration of a
British-made penny farthing for a New Glasgow museum. His auto body experience paid off, resulting in a
gleaming black machine accented with rich-looking brown handle grips to match the new leather seat and
tool bag, as well as highly polished brass bits. It´s as close to the original 130-year-old machine as he could
get, except for removing rust and a 20th-century layer of silver paint, and replacing rotting rubber tires and
a disintegrating padded leather seat. More/LIRE PLUS

More/LIRE PLUS
Cabinet curiosities create movable art
Edmonton Journal Share/Partager
We joke about how we'd love to rifle through other people's drawers, but seldom do we get the chance.
The Fast &Dirty art collective has assembled a quirky, intriguing mobile art show featuring five dressers
with curious, artful contents. Twenty artists are involved in Curiosities, each of them assigned one drawer
that adheres to that dresser´s theme, be it 'family', 'intimacy' and 'landscape'. There is a different curator for
each dresser. More/LIRE PLUS

More/LIRE PLUS
The art of living
Calgary Herald Share/Partager
For an inspiring 'worked-her-way-up-the-corporate-ladder' story, look no further than Kirstin Evenden.
Since first getting her foot in the door of the Glenbow Museum some 20 years ago as a three-month cultural
history department intern, she's since moved up to her current position as president and CEO of this highly
regarded cultural institution. Her passion for Glenbow and its mandate is as strong as ever. More/LIRE

Get around, get around, I get around
The Sault Star Share/Partager
It's been years coming but the septic, electricity, and plumbing is set to be installed in the round barn, now
located in Sowerby, east of Sault Ste. Marie. The Sowerby barn is one of two polygonal, 12-sided - or
correctly called dodecagonal -barns in Algoma and both have reasons to celebrate this summer. Only
three of this unique barn style remain in Canada. More/LIRE PLUS
War of 1812 exhibit at military museum
Brantford Expositor Share
Displays featuring weaponry, uniforms and the spartan lifestyle of soldiers during the War of 1812 are
featured at a display at the Canadian Military Heritage Museum on Greenwich Street. Tucked at the back of
the museum, visitors enter a 'fortification' smartly designed using weathered wooden posts discarded from
a ginseng farm to find showcases filled with items that bring the long ago conflict to life. More
Calgary history's port of call
Calgary Sun Share/Partager
Naval history has docked in Calgary. The Military Museums Sunday unveiled the port propeller from the
HMCS Huron, a Tribal-class Destroyer that protected Canada's waters between 1972 and 2005. Since
2007, the ship has rested about 100 km from Vancouver Island after it was decommissioned and sunk
during the Royal Canadian Navy´s Exercise Trident Fury. More/LIRE PLUS

She had been laying here at Naval Armament Depot in Dartmouth, in the full view of all who crossed the
Angus L. Macdonald Bridge, since her decommissioning 14 years earlier. I would often catch a glimpse of
her as I crossed the bridge. More/LIRE PLUS

Trail of the unexpected: Winnipeg
The Independent Share/Partager
What's the difference between a buffalo and a bison? The answer escapes me as I tuck into another succulent rib doused in smoky
chipotle sauce. The menu at Fude - a highly original restaurant in the Osborne quarter of Manitoba's capital, Winnipeg - is full of
unusual temptations. More/LIRE PLUS
