Kelowna Museums Society Appoints New Executive Director
The Kelowna Museums Board of Directors has named Lesley Moore as the organization's new Executive Director. She will assume her new position June 5, 2012. Moore will succeed Wayne Wilson who has led the Kelowna Museums since 2000.
Lesley thrives in the unique dynamic that community museums offer. She believes "museums bring together "people" and "place" through capturing stories and preserving memories, recognizing the diverse voices in their communities, sharing knowledge through collections, exhibitions and programs and most important - serving as a vital link from the past through the present and on into the future."
A B.A. in Urban Sociology and M.A. material culture studies followed by formal training at the U.B.C Museum of Anthropology and summer positions at the Royal B.C. Museum and Museum of Northern B.C. sparked Lesley's life-long passion for museums of all sorts. Lesley brings with her wide-ranging experience in the B.C. culture and heritage sector including positions as a curator of archaeology, a golf museum curator, ethno-history researcher, registrar, municipal museum director, manager of a heritage village, B.C.M.A. resource services coordinator, and most recently as senior cultural analyst with the Department of Canadian Heritage in Vancouver.
For 14 years, Lesley taught Museum Studies at Simon Fraser University's Public History Program. She has been actively involved in provincial and national museum committees, and has served on a variety of non-profit boards. She has been appointed to Community Heritage Commissions in Richmond and Burnaby, and to adjudication committees for both federal and provincial funders.
"The Kelowna Museums are inclusive and inspiring in their programming. They spark curiosity, learning and enjoyment, as well as meeting the stewardship responsibilities for the tangible and intangible heritage collections in their care. I am delighted to join such a strong, vibrant organization and be part of its ongoing development." said Moore.
"On behalf of the entire Board and Kelowna Museums community, I want to thank Wayne Wilson for his exceptional leadership and passion in growing Kelowna Museums into the Okanagan's heritage services resource centre it is today." says Rob Peter, Board President. "After 34 years with Kelowna Museums, we wish him the very best. We will miss him."
