Fraser River Discovery Centre and Hyack Festival Association Team up for New
Festival

New Westminster, BC –Two well-established festivals in New Westminster have
merged into one new and exciting event.

FraserFest and Artists on the River have fused to become RiverFest, a
joyful, artful, soulful and environmentally mindful celebration of the
Fraser River, to take place on the New Westminster riverfront and at the
Fraser River Discovery Centre. RiverFest will be presented free to the
public on the last weekend in September in honour of BC and World Rivers
Day.

The collaboration between Hyack Festival Association (FraserFest) and Fraser
River Discovery Centre (Artists on the River) increases the capacity to
plan, develop and present a quality festival which is a true celebration of
the river. RiverFest celebrates the living, working Fraser River and is
aimed at promoting a modern, vibrant, sustainable and livable riverfront in
New Westminster.

Catherine Ouellet-Martin, Executive Director at the Fraser River Discovery
Centre explains “Both organizations were expending significant resources,
time and efforts in preparing festivals that celebrated the Fraser River.
Combining resources for a better, stronger product simply makes sense”

With a new Executive Director at the helm of the Hyack Festival Association
and a renewed enthusiasm for collaboration, the partnership is a perfect
fit. Douglas Smith, Executive Director, agrees. “It’s a great example of
the willingness to work together that is required to build capacity. The
community is the big winner with the establishment of a sustainable,
signature event with an elevated overall delivery model”.

RiverFest will offer the best of both festivals and some new elements such
as the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean Up on Sunday, September 23 that will
launch the festival. The hallmark Paddlewheeler Riverboat tours and the
workboat parade will be back. Artists on the River’s artist and artisan
market will return along with exhibit booths and activities from
conservation organizations, community groups, and aboriginal groups to build
upon the river and environmental theme. Live music and entertainment will
complete the weekend offerings for an exciting, family-friendly,
entertaining festival atmosphere.

A long time supporter of New Westminster’s celebrations of the Fraser River,
Port Metro Vancouver agreed to be the Presenting Sponsor for the event. “We
look forward to presenting RiverFest and the paddlewheeler tours and
appreciate the importance of this event in educating surrounding communities
about the working Fraser River. It is great to be a part of this exciting
event.” says Laura Strand, Manager, Community and Aboriginal Affairs with
Port Metro Vancouver.

RiverFest is a co-production of the Fraser River Discovery Centre and the
Hyack Festival Association in partnership with the City of New Westminster
and The Arts Council of New Westminster.
