Terrific to see both the excellent preservation of this structure and the Museum's initiative in conducting tours. Well done Nanaimo!

  Media Release: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tour the Museum's Coal Miner Cottage this Summer

One of Nanaimo's hidden gems will be open to the public this summer. The Nanaimo Museum is hosting tours of its coal miner's cottage, a historic house located downtown. Tours will take place on a drop-in basis every Wednesday in July and August from 1pm to 3pm.

The cottage turns 115 years old this year and provides a unique glimpse into Nanaimo's coal mining past. "Many of Nanaimo's coal mining families lived in homes that were identical to this one," says Aimee Greenaway, Program & Volunteer Coordinator at the Nanaimo Museum. "The artifacts inside make the house like it would have in the 1910's. When you walk through the front door you feel like you are stepping back in time 100 years."

The cottage is open to school groups but is usually closed to the public. On Wednesday afternoons in the summer, a costumed guide will be offering tours or visitors may choose to look through the cottage's exhibits on their own. The cottage is located in Piper Park, on the grounds of the Vancouver Island Military Museum (the former site of the Nanaimo Museum). The steam locomotive in the park beside the miner's cottage will also be open. Admission is by donation.

Family-friendly activities will also take place at the Miner's Cottage this summer. Every Friday from 1:30-3:00pm the Nanaimo Museum will be offering Time Machine Mania, a program that is aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 12 years. "Time Machine Mania offers hands-on activities for kids such as trying out a wringer washer and making butter," says Greenaway. "They are usually shocked by how small the house is and how many household chores that children were responsible for 100 years ago."

The cottage is on the City of Nanaimo's Heritage Register and is a rare surviving example of a housing style that was once commonly found in Nanaimo. It was originally owned by Frederick Rowbottom and located on Farquhar Street in the South end. In the late 1970s the cottage was donated by the Sutton family and moved to its current location after it faced demolition for street improvements.
