Join historian and Senior Planner for Downtown Vancouver, Michael Gordon in an exploration of one of Vancouver's most famous streets and its buildings. Starting with its connections to the CPR in the 1880s, Michael Gordon will explain the origins of Granville and why it is still one of Vancouver's pre-eminent 'high streets' reflecting many elements that define our city.
A knowledge historian, Michael Gordon will highlight the past and current roles of the street as a transit hub; a shopping street; an office, hotel, and entertainment district; and a cultural and neon mecca. Along the way, Gordon will discuss historic Granville Street buildings such as the Yale Hotel (1888). In its 12 blocks, Granville Street is a collection of many different streets and offers much to observe as well as a chance to reflect on Vancouver’s past, present and future.
Heritage Vancouver is a nonprofit organization that educates and advocates for heritage conservation and facilitates lectures, historical events and tours, working closely with local and provincial organizations.
