Dear Friend of the Castle,

March Break is just around the corner, so if you are looking for
something to do, we've got ideas for you!

Elementary age tours and activities:

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, we will offer tours for
kids ages 8-10.  Each session will feature a guided tour of the
Castle, a Victorian-era craft, snack and games.  (Indoor or outdoor
weather depending.)

Tuesday and Thursday mornings will be for ages 5-7.  All sessions run
from 9:30 - noon and cost $25 for the 2.5 hours.

Craft Classes for Teens/Young Adults:

Monday, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays will feature a different
craft class for teens / young adults.  Pre-registration and payment
is required, class sizes are limited.  Note:  Materials fees are paid
in cash to the instructor.

Modern day Silhouette art: Monday, March 12th 2-4 p.m. $25 + $5
materials fee (payable to instructor.)
Here is your chance to participate in an updated version of the
beautiful Victorian craft of silhouette making. Bring some of your
favorite photos to class and learn how to turn them into art. What
the students need to bring: favorite photos with interesting poses,
$5.00 to cover the cost of course materials.

Introduction to Hand-Stitched Embroidery: Wednesday, March 14th 2-4
p.m. $25 +$5 materials fee. Embroidering is like painting with
thread, in Victorian times women used embroidery to liven up their
favorite dresses, pillow cases, and various accessories like purses
and shoes. It was a way to express individuality and turn an ordinary
item into something to be treasured.  What to bring: A small pair of
sharp fabric scissors + $5 for materials.

Introduction to Knitting (make a scarf): Friday, March 16th 2-4 p.m.
$25 - BYO needles & yarn.  Knitting has always been a beautiful way
to make clothing out of string. Come to the castle to learn the
basics and get started on your very own small knitting project. We
will cover the basics to getting started and finishing a project. We
will learn how to 'read' the stitches and correct any mistakes as we
go along. What the students need to bring: one pair of US size 8
(5mm) knitting needles, one ball of worsted weight yarn.

DÉcoupage: A Victorian era Pastime:
Saturday, March 17th from 10 AM - 1pm $50: DÉcoupage means to cut
out. Like a decorative a form of papier machÉ, this is a unique way
to embellish something with beautiful paper. Bring an object of your
choice - box, plate or something else to decorate! We will provide
the paper, glue, etc.  Taught by Julia Andrews.

Introduction to crochet (make a headband):
Monday, March 19th 2-4 p.m. $25 (BYO hook & yarn.) Crochet was used
in Victorian times not only to create beautiful lacelike articles of
clothing but to add embellishment to many items in their homes such
as bed spreads, pillow cases, and trim for pieces of clothing.
Together we will cover the basics of crochet learning how to 'read'
our projects and create something by hand with a hook and
yarn...probably a headband or a scarf. What you need to bring: one
6mm crochet hook, one ball of worsted weight yarn.

Victorian Stencil Art (design and print your own stencil): Wed. March
21st 2-4 p.m. $25 + $10 materials fee. Learn this popular
Victorian-era craft. Stencilling is an excellent way to create a
beautiful piece of art or embellish something without having to have
great skill in either drawing or painting. Come to the castle to
create a fun stencilled project by creating and then using a stencil
of your own design. We will be stencilling tote bags and creating art
to hang on the wall. If you would like to bring in a t-shirt to add a
picture to feel free. What the students need to bring: $10.00 for the
cost of materials, one exacto knife, any personal article of clothing
they will to embellish.

Teacups into Pincushions (create a custom pincushion!): Friday, March
23rd 2-4 p.m. $25 - (Bring your own Teacup) This class is an
opportunity to turn a pretty teacup and saucer into a beautiful
pincushion to use or give as a gift. We will not only be making the
pin cushion but creating our very own one of a kind pins to go with
the cushion. Come to the castle to be creative and walk away with
something beautiful.What the students need to bring: One teacup
(saucer optional) , $5.00 for cost of materials (payable to
instructor.

Scrapbooking: This Victorian craft is now in a renaissance! Saturday
March 24th from 10 AM - 1pm $50 + Bring your own BOOK to fill with
beautiful papers and photographs. Bring your photos and we'll supply
some bonus papers and materials to decorate your scrapbook! A great
idea for a birthday gift, or simply a keepsake!

Spring Adult Vintage Craft Workshops
We have added a new series of workshops on Saturdays focusing on
Vintage or heritage crafts.  Taught by local artists and experts,
these unique courses offer a range of artistic disciplines rarely

Heirloom Button Making -Intermediate (SOLD OUT)

Instructor Name: Jean Betts
Date: Saturday, March 3rd
Time: 10 AM - 1 PM
Cost:  $40/student

Class Description: Learn to make needle woven buttons using small
amounts of yarn.  Match an outfit or add beads for fun. Victorian
woven buttons were used from about 1850 until 1920. This intermediate
class will introduce variations and a fabric button onto the Dorset
style taught in January.

Course Title: Needle Tatting

Class Description: Needle tatting is a method of making beautiful,
sturdy lace, which reached the height of its popularity in the
Victorian era. It can be used to make jewelry, edgings and
insertions, doilies and tablecloths, veils, framed artwork and more.
In this class, learn to tat a motif using a variety of basic tatting
shapes, how to analyze the parts of that motif to make smaller
objects from it, and how to read and design your own simple tatting
charts and patterns.

Class Description:

A flower explosion just in time for Spring! You will make several
styles of fabric flowers perfect to decorate furnishings, hats,
purses, brooches, headbands and hairclips. Beautiful fabrics to sew
or glue and embellish to your taste with beads, buttons, sequins.

Leather Venetian Bookbinding

Instructor Name: Vladimir Flad
Date: Saturday, April 21, 2012
Time: 10 AM - 3 PM
Cost: $140    Materials Fee:  $60

Class Size:  Min. 8 -  Max. 10

Class Description:

During this workshop you will create your own Venetian bound leather
journal. Known as one of the oldest methods of bookbinding, these
one-of-a-kind journals are not only visually stunning, but also fun
to make. You will learn about different kinds of leather and how to
work with it. You will also learn how to handle leather tools safely.
These quality books will last for generations and can be used as
sketchbooks, diaries, dream or travel-journals as well as
photo-albums.

An additional optional tool kit can be ordered and purchased through
the instructor. This kit allows the participant to work with leather
and make journals at the convenience of their own home in the future.
Kit includes: 1 cutting board 18 x 24 inches, 1 straight edge, 1
fabric/leather cutting tool, 1 lace cutter, 1 hole punch tool, 1
exacto knife, 1 pliers, 1 marker and enough leather and archival
paper to make at least 2 more journals. Cost for this kit is $250.
