Job Description
The VHEC is about to embark on the development of a “Core Exhibit” devoted to the history of the Holocaust, featuring primary source material from its collection and emphasizing the experiences of survivors who settled in Vancouver after the war. The VHEC is seeking a Curator to oversee the development of this exhibit.
The Exhibit Curator will report directly to the Executive Director. This is a full-time, contract-based position with an anticipated start during the summer of 2012.
The Exhibit Curator will gain familiarity with the VHEC’s collection of artefacts and video testimonies; develop an exhibit story board; work with the VHEC Archivist to identify artefacts for exhibition purposes; advise the Archivist on the acquisition of artefacts; work with the VHEC’s Videographer to coordinate the recording of Holocaust survivor testimonies and to select excerpts of testimony for exhibition purposes; supervise researchers working on the project; write exhibit text; work with a design team on the concept design for the exhibit, including panels, display cases and interactive exhibit elements; help plan and maintain the exhibit budget; collaborate with the VHEC’s Education Coordinator to identify opportunities for student engagement with the exhibit; and communicate exhibit plans to a variety of project stakeholders.
The successful applicant will have a graduate degree in History, Holocaust Studies or Museum Studies and 3-5 years of curatorial experience. An understanding of current issues in Holocaust history and education, as well as exhibition strategies, is important for this role. The candidate should have outstanding written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, a keen attention to detail and the ability to think creatively. The Exhibit Curator must be able to work independently and effectively as part of a small and cohesive team, and be able to manage a complex project to deadline.
How to Apply
Interested individuals are invited to send a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and the contact details for three references to jobs at vhec.org.
The deadline for submissions is March 30, 2012.
The VHEC expresses appreciation to all those who apply, however only those short-listed will be contacted for interviews.
