CLOSING WEEK FOR CURRENT EXHIBITION C.1983

This is the last chance to see C.1983 Part One. The exhibition
of camera art produced in Vancouver from 1981 to 1987 includes
photographic, film, video, mixed media and bookworks by Marian
Penner Bancroft, Kati Campbell, Stan Douglas, Ellie Epp, Arni
Runar Haraldsson, Laiwan, Ken Lum, Michelle Normoyle, Elizabeth
Vander Zaag and Ian Wallace. Many of these works are on view for
the first time since initially exhibited.

On the last day Sunday, March 11 at 1 pm there will be a public
discussion about the exhibition with Helga Pakasaar and Claudia
Beck. Presentation House Gallery curator Helga Pakasaar who
organized the exhibition will introduce C.1983 followed by a
discussion about the artworks with Claudia Beck, a photography
collector who during the seventies and early eighties operated
NOVA Gallery, an important Vancouver commercial gallery that
specialized in photography.

C. 1983 Part Two opens on Friday, March 23 at 7 pm. A rare
presentation of Rodney Graham's legendary film, Two Generators
(1984), will be screened continuously in the Presentation House
Theatre from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Please join us for what promises
to be a very special opening event. Continuing until May 6, Part
Two extends the experimental and self-reflective approaches to
image making of Part One, with a focus on appropriation and
collage techniques.

Both C.1983 exhibitions are presented in honour of Kitty Heller,
with generous support from her estate.

UPDATE FACILITY NEWS

On the evening of Monday March 5, Presentation House Gallery
presented a positive report on our capacity to fundraise for a
new facility to City of North Vancouver Council. The report was
commissioned by Council and produced by Ketchum Canada Inc. It
was drawn from the participation and feedback of over 150 of our
supporters, and we wish to thank everyone who helped us with
this study for their generous time and valued input.

Council's response was to endorse our potential move and direct
City staff to begin facilitating negotiations for a site on the
waterfront. While this is not yet confirmation of a location,
its the most significant step forward for the gallery's many
years of work.

CHESTER FIELDS DOUBLE TAKE

This Spring, Presentation House Gallery, North Vancouver is
holding the fifth in a series of photo contests designed to
inspire and encourage youth. We are asking students to submit a
photograph in response to our theme Double Take. Last season,
with Foreign Object, we caught a glimpse into someone else’s
cultural experience. This season for Chester Fields we are
asking students to think about archives. Why do we save things
from our past and what can they tell us about how things change?
For Double Take students will choose an image (it can be really
old or not very) and let it inspire them to create a
contemporary response. Archival images may be chosen from the
North Vancouver Museum and Archives Collection or from a
personal archive (old family photographs might be a good place
to start!). We look forward to the entries that show us how the
same place, person, object or building has changed over time!
