'Wolfchucks' by Louie Gong (detail)
Join a mix of artists, curators, and scholars for an afternoon of discussion inspired by Doug Cranmer's artistic history and legacy. Topics will range from alternative expressions of artistic engagement and resistance used by Indigenous artists for decades, the complexities of participating in the art market, and the critical role of Indigenous curators.
Participants include Paul Chaat Smith (Comanche author, essayist, and Associate Curator, Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian), Tania Willard and Kathleen Ritter (co-curators of the VAG's Beat Nation exhibition), Corrine Hunt (Kwakwaka'wakw artist and co-designer of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic medals), Louie Gong and Xwalaktun (artists), Skeena Reece (performance artist), Loretta Todd (filmmaker), Eugenia Kissen (NYU doctoral student specializing in the visuality of culture, or culture of visuality), and Solen Roth, UBC PhD candidate, whose research focuses on the different ways in which Northwest Coast-derived designs are shared, negotiated, and commodified as part of the contemporary art market). MOA curators Jennifer Kramer, Karen Duffek, and Jill Baird will also participate.
Live performances by musician Cris Derksen and Margaret Grenier of the Dancers of Damelahamid are included in the program.
Schedule:
10:00 - 10:30: self-guided visit to exhibition Kesu': The Art and Life of Doug Cranmer

In association with the Saturday sessions of MOA's Global Dialogue (10 am-6 pm, Sat May 12; see below), we're pleased to announce that Kathleen Ritter and Tania Willard, curators of the VAG's 'Beat Nation,' will be giving a tour of the exhibition and hosting an afternoon discussion at the Vancouver Art Gallery on Friday, May 11, from 1 pm to 4 pm (tour of the exhibit at 1 pm; discussion from 2-4 pm).
