SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

 

Organization: Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia

Job title: Education Assistant

Duration: 30 hours per week (7.5 hours per day), Mondays - Thursdays

Start and end dates: June 4, 2012 - August 24, 2012 (12 weeks)

Hourly Wage: $14 per hour

 

The JEWISH mUSEUM AND aRCHIVES OF bc is seeking an Education Assistant to assist in the development of BC Jewish History Week. 

 

BC Jewish History Week has the opportunity to become an annual tradition and a successful, replicable model for other Jewish Historical Societies in Canada, and beyond; a YCW candidate would contribute to the Week's success. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

·        Use primary and secondary resources, and interviews, to create the copy and images required to build a unique exhibit piece and exhibition narrative, for each participating organization.

·        Outreach to BC Jewish organizations to educate organizations about this opportunity and confirm participation, and research each individual participating organization.

·        Assist with the creation of a uniform design for the panels as well as a draft exhibition plan for all final pieces.

·        Create an outline for self-guided and guided tours.

 

The successful candidate for this position may also assist in Education and Programming duties as time permits. These secondary duties will diversify the Education Assistant's work experience and expose the successful candidate to many different aspects of working in a community-based heritage institution. These duties may include:

 

·        Research articles, publications, and photographs from the JMABC collection.

·        Assist in research and development of other small-scale exhibitions.

·        Provide assistance during historic walking tours of Jewish sites in Vancouver.

·        Add content to the JMABC website.

·        Write articles and/or press releases about the JMABC educational initiatives.

 

Qualifications:

 

·        A demonstrated interest in working in a history or heritage institution as shown through previous volunteer or paid work experiences and/or an academic background in a related field such as history, anthropology, museum studies, Jewish studies, education, or project management.

·        Basic computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

·        Comfortable working independently at a computer station and/or remotely.

·        Excellent English communications skills, both written and verbal.

·        A positive, up-beat attitude and a strong work ethic.

·        Attention to detail. 

·        Any experience working with digital imaging software such as Adobe Photoshop will be considered an asset.

 

This position is being offered due to funding received through the Young Canada Works (YCW), administered by the Canadian Museums Association (CMA). Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements dictated by the YCW program to be considered for this position:

 

·        Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada.

·        Be legally entitled to work in Canada.

·        Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of the project.

·        Meet the specific eligibility criteria of the program to which you apply.

·        Be registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory.

·        Be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.

·        Not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW.

·        Have been a full-time student in the semester preceding the YCW job.

·        Intent to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.
