Gallery Presents Four New Exhibitions by Okanagan Artists

Where: The Vernon Public Art Gallery, 3228 31st Avenue, 250-545-3173

The Vernon Public Art Gallery is pleased to announce that the next
exhibition schedule includes four new exhibitions, all by artists based in
the North and Central Okanagan. Guests, artists, and members are invited to
attend the opening reception on Thursday, May 31st, from 6:00 - 8:00pm.
Enjoy food and drinks, and live guitar and lyrical performance by local
musician Jimmy Balfour. The reception is open to the public and admission is
by donation to the Gallery.

One week following the opening, participating artist Amy Burkard will
provide an artist presentation on Saturday, June 9th at 1:00 pm, the same
day Burkard is teaching a felting workshop at the Gallery. The Spring Fling,
Come Learn to Felt! workshop is open to all levels and it runs from 11:00am
- 4:00pm. Anyone interested in taking part in the workshop are encouraged to
pre-register by calling the Gallery at 250-545-3173. More information is

Kelowna based artist Shauna Oddleifson will also provide an artist
presentation on Saturday, June 23rd, at 1:00pm. Oddleifson will discuss her
work in the exhibition titled "I Heard a Story Once", a series of drawings
and intaglio prints.

Both artist presentations are open to the public at a suggested donation to
the Gallery of $5.

UBCO BFA Graduate Exhibition: Twenty Twelve, May 31 - July 26, 2012
Twenty Twelve includes a wide-ranging collection of artwork created and
exhibited by 34 emerging artists and Bachelor of Fine Arts graduates from
the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British
Columbia, Okanagan Campus. The diversity of media includes traditional art
forms such as painting, printmaking and sculpture. Also featured will be
interactive sound and video displays, large-scale photography, soft
sculptures, illustrated journals, and screen-printed collage. There is even
an opportunity to engage with relational art in the form of a free-standing
confession booth. The Vernon Public Art Gallery hosts the BFA graduate
exhibition annually, creating an opportunity to showcase the latest art
practices from the Okanagan.

Shauna Oddleifson: I Heard a Story Once, May 31 - July 26, 2012

Shauna Oddleifson, a Kelowna, BC-based artist, has produced an exhibition
titled I Heard a Story Once, comprised of a series of drawings that
addresses the issues of wild animals and their intersection with the urban
environment. In addition to drawings, Oddleifson will exhibit miniature
intaglio prints of animals personified with human-like attributes and
actions that raise awareness about their co-existence and daily interactions
with the people living in interfacing areas. 

Amy Burkard: Cozy, May 31 - July 26, 2012

Amy Burkard, a Kelowna, BC-based artist presents an exhibition titled
"Cozy", a series of sculptural objects. The exhibition will explore the
relationship of the form and function in relation to the discourse about
what constitutes an art object vs. craft. Burkard's exhibition further
addresses the issues of functional art, its utilitarian value, and its
aesthetic purpose.

Vernon Camera Club: Through the Lens, May 31 - June 29, 2012
The Vernon Camera Club is a group of photographers who meet to share
knowledge and experience through presentations, photo competitions,
workshops and photo shoots. Artists' abilities encompass novice to master,
using film and digital, ranging from simple to complex equipment. The club
meets on a twice a monthly basis, providing constructive support and guest
presentations, slide shows and "how to" tutorials. In the last year members
have enjoyed a diversity of presentations both amateur and professional,
including fashion, nature and travel photography. Through the Lens, is a
exhibition showcasing the variety and diversity of the members of the Vernon
Camera Club.
