ARTIST TALK: Hua Jin

Vancouver artist Hua Jin will give a tour of My Big Family and will
speak about the project and her family stories in relation to the
Chinese One Child policy and contemporary China. 

 

The photographic and video works comprising the exhibition, My Big
Family, are part of a long-term project by Vancouver based artist, Hua
Jin, that explores a changing family structure in China as a result of
its population control programs, particularly the One-Child Policy
established in 1979. Jin, who was three years old at the time, belongs
to one of the first generations affected by the mandate. The project,
begun in the summer of 2010, documents over fifty relatives living in
northern and eastern China as they attend to their daily tasks. My Big
Family dually functions as a portrait of a specific family and as a
cultural portrait of an evolving China, undergoing dramatic economic and
social transformations. The exhibition continues until June 10.

 

Jin lived in Shanghai for more than 20 years before moving to Vancouver
in 2007. She was trained as an animator and graphic designer and has
worked as an artistic creative director for more than 10 years. Her
works have been shown in exhibitions in China, Netherlands and Canada
since 2005. Her photo-based works are included in many publications and
private collections, as well as the public collection of Museum of
Contemporary Art in Shanghai (MOCA). Hua Jin is a recent graduate from
Emily Carr University and was the winner of the 2012 Canon Photography
Award.

 

The event is open to the general public and admission is free.
