Introducing Guest Speaker
Ray Dumette
"Great Entrepreneurs of the Mining Industry
in the Age of Empires"
Join us November 20th 2012, for presentation by Professor Raymond
Dumett of Purdue University who will be speaking about Great
Entrepreneurs of the Mining Industry in the age of Empires as they
relate to the history of British Columbia and Vancouver Island. The
intent is to bring greater understanding of the business dealings of
Craigdarroch's builder, Robert Dunsmuir, and others who contributed
to the development of business and community during the late 1800 and
early 1900's.
This presentation is open to the public and will take place at Grace
Lutheran Church, 1273 Fort Street, Victoria, BC, followed by a
reception at Craigdarroch Castle.
The evening's speaker, Raymond Dumett (Ph.D. London), is Professor of
History at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, and is a
ranking authority in the economic history of Africa and the history
of the British Empire. He has published widely in such fields as
agricultural history, slavery, trade and entrepreneurship, imperial
finance and railways, territorial expansion, and the economics of
mining enterprise. Professor Dumett has been a visiting lecturer at
the universities of Cape Town, British Columbia, and Washington. He
was a visiting senior member at Linacre College, Oxford and is a
member of the Royal Historical Society. He is the author and/or
editor of five books, including El Dorado in West Africa: the Gold
Mining Frontier, African Labour and Colonial Capitalism (1998);
Mining Tycoons in the Age of Empire: Entrepreneurship, High Finance,
Politics and Territorial Expansion (2009) and Problems of Rural
Development: Case Studies and Multi-disciplinary Perspectives
(1980).
Our evening will be a double experience -- an educational lecture on
an outstanding subject that bears on the Dunsmuir story and a social
occasion for networking and discussion. The lecture takes place
November 20th at 7:00 pm at Grace Lutheran Church. Doors will open at
6:40pm and the lecture will be followed by a reception in
Craigdarroch Castle. Reservations are required. Tickets can be
purchased by calling the Castle at 250.592.5323. Prices are $5 for
