The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, British Columbia is pleased to offer the following learning opportunity:

Cultural Tourism: Realizing the Opportunity (HA 489H)

January 21 - 26, 2013; on-campus offering

Instructor: Steven Thorne

For the past decade, the growth of cultural tourism has challenged cities and regions to capitalize on their cultural and heritage assets. Once regarded as a niche market, cultural tourism has emerged as a major market segment and a significant motivator for travel.

Explore how to make the most of this fast-growing market, especially if you:

* work as a civic cultural manager,
* market a museum, gallery, festival, heritage attraction or other cultural experience, or
* work for an economic development agency or destination marketing organization.

Get the marketing tools and development strategies you need to succeed in "place-based" cultural tourism in the context of destination planning. You'll learn how to:

* understand the rise of cultural tourism as a market segment
* think critically about what cultural tourism is, and what it is not
* identify key factors that make cultural tourism experiences exportable

Past course participants have remarked:
"Much more than I bargained for - I was taking this as peripheral to my work- now I see this can be central to it!"
"I will definitely be able to use the skills I've developed here to the benefit of my organization."
"I think [Steven] was direct, to the point, extremely knowledgeable and...charming, too."

Fee: Fee: CAD $693 (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options) including a CAD$75 materials fee and a CAD$100 tuition/registration deposit is required with each registration form. The tuition balance of CAD$518 is due on or before the first day of the course. UVSS Fees will also be assessed to credit students only.

Registration deadline: December 12; late registrations accepted if space permits.
