In an interview with Kirstin Evenden last September, the Glenbow Museum president and chief executive
officer exuded confidence and optimism. There was an exciting show opening at the end of the month -
Fairy Tales, Monsters and the Genetic Imagination. And planning for a new facility for the Glenbow was still
on track, she said, even in the wake of summer layoffs and a decision to close the museum on Mondays in
a cost-saving exercise. More/LIRE PLUS

The Vancouver Art Gallery has a new chair - and an operating surplus. At its annual general meeting, the
VAG reported an operating surplus for 2011 to 2012 of $336,954 - a dramatic turnaround from the previous
fiscal year, when the gallery was $886,080 in the red. The surplus will be used to offset the previous deficit.

Ukrainian experts to speak on Holodomor
Winnipeg Free Press Share/Partager
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is about to shed new light on the genocide that wiped out
millions of Ukrainians in the early 1930s. The museum has organized visits to Canada this month by two
world-renowned Ukrainian researchers who have been analyzing hundreds of thousands of Soviet leader
Joseph Stalin's secret police files that add proof of the deliberate nature of the atrocities that occurred
between 1932-33. The documents only came to light in 2006. More/LIRE PLUS

Escaping the shadow of Pompeii
The New York Times Share/Partager
They are poignant snapshots of sudden death: huddled clusters of skeletal remains in what were once
beachfront warehouses, immortalized for eternity when Mount Vesuvius smothered this ancient Roman
town in A.D. 79. First excavated by archaeologists some 30 years ago, the warehouses were recently
outfitted with walkways and gates to provide access to these chilling tableaus and will soon be open to the
public on special occasions. More/LIRE PLUS
