Richard Prince: Telling Stories (with digressions)
November 10, 2012 to January 13, 2013
October 26, 2012 - Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Vancouver-based artist, Richard Prince. Opening November 10, 2012, Richard Prince: Telling Stories (with digressions) features sculptures that will intrigue Kelowna audiences. Some people may feel his works looks like real-life versions of devices seen on The Jetsons or like experimental scientific equipment transplanted directly from a lab in a movie from the fifties. The pieces range from tall and spindly contraptions on wheels to complex set-ups involving multiple objects which appear to project, measure or perform some other esoteric function.
Richard Prince is a fascinating artist who espouses a "bricoleur" aesthetic and working method. Often his works have narrative aspects, and moving parts, and seem light-hearted in tone. Upon closer looking and thinking, however, darker and deeper themes may emerge. The Storyteller's Cart (and the Cart of the Necessities) with Bicycle included in this exhibition, is one of Prince's largest, most complex and most ambitious works to date. It combines a real bicycle hooked up with a rig to allow a rider to pull two loaded boxes behind him or herself. Both the Cart of the Necessities and the Props Cart will be opened to show their inner compartments, revealing various items Prince has found or purpose-built to be loaded up inside.
A fifty-two page catalogue with duotone reproductions of each work will be produced to accompany the show. The catalogue will feature a curatorial text written, by Kelowna Art Gallery Curator, Liz Wylie.
An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, November 9, 2012, from 7 to 9 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. This will be a free event, open to members and guests, by invitation. Artist Richard Prince will be in attendance.
Richard Prince: Telling Stories (with digressions) will be on view from November 10, 2012 to January 13, 2013 at the Kelowna Art Gallery.
The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in downtown Kelowna. For more information about current exhibitions, public programming or special events, please visit the Kelowna Art Gallery online at www.kelownaartgallery.com<http://www.kelownaartgallery.com>.
