JOB POSTING AND DESCRIPTION
Title: Curator & Education Manager
Reports To: Executive Director
JOB STATUS
Permanent, full-time, Tuesday to Friday, 30 hours per week, some evenings and weekend hours required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
School program and extension staff, public programmer, program volunteers, temporary/summer student staff and temporary /grant curatorial staff.
JOB SUMMARY
As Curator, the position is responsible for research, interpretation, collection development and exhibitions relating to the Museum collection areas. The position also assists with collection management and public service in the archives. As Education Manager this position oversees the development and delivery of all interpretive programming at the Museum, including public programs and school programs. The Education Manager is also responsible for the development of curriculum related school programming.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Curatorial
* Carries out research, collection development, documentation and interpretation for the Museum according to professional standards.
* Acts as member of the exhibition team, planning, developing, and mounting temporary and permanent exhibitions to meet the needs of the community and both established and new audiences with diverse interests and characteristics. Acts as project leader with regard to the content and presentation of exhibits.
* Monitors accuracy of artifact information with regard to historical/ethnographic background and use.
* Respects cultural origins and cultural integrity of objects and their uses.
* Recommends policy and procedures in areas of responsibility, in particular, makes recommendations on policy relating to the collection, care, and interpretation of First Nations material culture.
* Assists with preparation of funding requests and grant applications to governments, other funding agencies, individuals and corporations in relation to collections, exhibits, and programs as required. Maintains relationships with donors and funding bodies.
* Provides in-house appraisals of artifact values for tax receipt purposes.
* Prepares applications for the certification of cultural property.
* Serves as a member of the Acquisitions Committee recommending acquisition and appraisal of material for inclusion in the artifact collection.
* Identifies and recommends material for inclusion in the archives.
* Conducts research and prepares findings for publication and/or distribution.
* Establishes community links and partnerships to achieve goals as appropriate to areas of responsibility and represents the Museum locally, regionally and nationally as necessary.
* Prepares budgets and monitors expenditures.
* Designs and implements research projects as needed to further the Museum's goals and mandate. In order to bring these projects to fruition, may establish partnerships with other institutions and seek out untapped funding opportunities.
Programming/ Education
* Provides overall direction for the development and delivery of interpretive programs relating to regional history, the museum's collections and exhibitions and complementing school curriculums and the Museum mandate.
* Maintains strong links and networks with relevant school districts and other educational agencies.
* Maintains and develops the education collection of "hands-on" material; develops and oversees the management of education kits.
* Develops curriculum related school programs.
* Prepares budgets and monitors expenditures related to programming and education.
* Prepares and assists with grant writing and funding applications relating to this area of responsibility as required.
Human Resources
* Hires, trains, ensures job descriptions, evaluates as required for program coordinators, temporary staff, summer student staff and volunteers.
Communication/ Liaison
* Acts as a liaison with First Nations communities.
* Acts as a liaison with relevant school district personnel, teachers and Ministry of Education resource personnel for programming development and implementation.
* Maintains links and communication with personnel from other museums, community groups and individuals, educational institutions (including universities and colleges), and government bodies involved in funding and research.
* Ensures effective and open communication with colleagues and the public.
Related Museum Functions
* Acts as back-up for collections manager and assists with collections management.
* Purchases books for library and assists with archival duties, including public reference service.
* Makes recommendations for books and other material to sell in shop relating to areas of responsibility.
* Is an effective team member to support all activities and achieve museum goals.
* Ensures security and safety of visitors, staff, collections, equipment and property.
* Is a member of the Acquisitions Committee.
* Other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
* Graduate degree in anthropology, history or related field
* Comprehensive knowledge of Northwest Coast ethnology and history
* Comprehensive knowledge of exhibit development processes, collection development and care, material culture studies and research, as well as museum education and programming
* Excellent research skills
* Public speaking ability
* Strong oral and written communication skills
* Strong interpersonal and team work skills
* Excellent program development and evaluation skills
* Current computer skills
* Education or training in Museum Studies
* Minimum of three years of museum related experience
