Museum of history timeline draws fire before feedback tour

The Museum of Civilization wants the public to weigh in on what a history museum should contain, but the
website it created to collect feedback is raising some eyebrows. The museum is getting ready to change its
name, and plans to present history more in terms of milestones than as vignettes of culture through time.

When Heritage Minister James Moore revealed recently that the Canadian Museum of Civilization was
being renamed the Canadian Museum of History, a large ship's bell was among the artifacts arrayed
around him at the gala announcement. Had anyone looked closely, they would have noticed the name

Lake of the Woods Museum offers good news for council

Kenora councillors got some good news recently. It came in the budget request from the Lake of the
Woods Museum. "You'll note by comparing this year's with next year's that it's a $9,000 reduction. We think
that's a good thing," said the museum's director, Lori Nelson. The savings come from staffing changes,
including the retirement of a long-time staff member. The museum is looking for a contribution of just under
384 thousand dollars from the city in coming year. Final tax rates for Kenora aren't expected to be passed

called Two Views: Photography by Ansel Adams and Leonard Frank, features photographs of Japanese
Americans and Canadians being taken to and held in internment camps during the latter years of the

'Everywhere I saw devastation': Civilian life on the front line during the War of 1812

Everywhere Thomas-René-Verchères Boucher de Boucherville looked in 1815, "I saw devastation, homes
in ashes, fields trampled and laid waste, forts demolished, forests burned and blackened, truly a most pitiful
sight." The Canadian militiaman, who had fought with Sir Isaac Brock during the 1812 British capture of
Detroit, was writing about the War of 1812's horrific toll on the Niagara peninsula. More/LIRE PLUS
